Cedartown, located about 70 miles from Atlanta, has an outsized history for such a small place. Located some 70 miles northwest of Atlanta, just across the state line from Alabama, this community of 10,000 was the site of a Cherokee removal camp along the Trail of Tears and one of the Georgia cities burned to the ground during the Civil War.
Today Cedartown is working to revitalize its downtown and add to an impressive list of amenities for those who call it home. The school district and The Hon Company are among its biggest employers. And SOLARCYCLE, a solar recycling technology company, is expected to create about 1,200 jobs when its two new facilities open in 2027.

Shopping, dining and living in downtown Cedartown
Aimee Madden, a lifelong resident and Cedartown’s public information officer, says the city has worked hard to bring life back to its downtown after it was gutted by the spread of big-box retail in the 1980s and 90s. The city commissioned the University of Georgia in 2014 to help it revitalize the area. Madden says officials took the advice and now 10 years later downtown is thriving. “We still do have storefronts that are vacant, but I would say they are few and far between,” she says. The area has a new feel, with updated streetscapes and loft apartments. Locally owned boutiques and restaurants are cropping up to fill the area. Chain restaurants and big-box retailers are mostly clustered along North Main Street.

A new playground at Peek Park
The city is home to half a dozen parks, including Peek Park and Big Spring Park. Peek features a playground built by about 800 volunteers in 2024. “There were jobs for everybody,” Madden says. “Little kids could carry lumber, and the adults brought their power tools.” Peek Park also hosts an annual summer concert series. Big Spring is home to the second-largest limestone spring in the southern United States. It produces about 4 million gallons of water a day, a portion of which is available for residents to enjoy during hot summer days.

New developments coming to Cedartown to keep up with jobs
The median home price in Cedartown is just under $240,000, significantly lower than the Atlanta median. Available homes range from 1900 bungalows to Craftsman-style homes built in the 1920s. Ranch-style homes are also found throughout town. Madden says the city is working with multiple developers to bring new single-family homes and townhouses to the city. The new homes will help keep up with expected demand after SOLARCYCLE opens its doors.

Commuting to Atlanta or Rome
Main Street is Cedartown’s major thoroughfare. U.S. Highway 27 connects to Interstate 20 a few miles south of the city. Atlanta is about 70 miles away. The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the closest major airport. Residents can find some hospital services at Atrium Health Floyd’s Polk Medical Center, a 25-bed critical access facility. Two major, full-service hospitals are in Rome, about 20 miles away. Some Cedartown residents commute to Atlanta, Rome or Carrolton for work.
Hot, rainy weather and lower crime rates than Atlanta
Cedartown’s subtropical climate means there are plenty of summer days where temperatures rise above 90 degrees. The area’s annual rainfall average is more than 50 inches.
Recent crime data from the Georgia Bureau of Investigations shows that Polk County had a substantially lower crime rate than Fulton County, home to Atlanta. In 2023, Polk County’s crime rate was around 17 per 1,000 people, compared to Fulton County’s 32 per 1,000 people. Data for 2022 showed a similar trend, with the rate in Polk County at 11 crimes per 1,000 people and that in Fulton County at 30 per 1,000 people.
