Centerfield is a small rural community near the La Sal Mountains

Incorporated in 1907, Centerfield was named for its Gunnison Valley location between the San Pitch Mountains and the La Sal Mountains, a popular recreation site nearby. Although it’s technically a city, Centerfield has a small-town atmosphere. The area has a long-enduring cattle presence and remains home to many dairy farms. “I think the biggest reason people move here is because it’s a rural area, and it's a farming community, with a simple way of life,” says owner/broker Robert Childs, who works with Central Utah Professional Realty and has over five decades of experience in the area. The community has a population of approximately 1,400, and its CAP Index Crime Score is a 2 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.

Ranch-style homes, Cape Cods and bungalows in Centerfield

Centerfield is made up of grid-style streets of single-family homes, and residents often have panoramic views of both mountain ranges. Lawns tend to be spacious, with barns and grazing horses throughout the area. On the outskirts of Centerfield, lots can stretch over multiple acres, where there are multiple farms. The home styles include ranch-style homes, Cape Cods, bungalows and cottages. According to a Homes.com calculation, which uses a combination of estimate data, the average home value in Centerfield was around $370,000 in the spring of 2025. “Right now, real estate is pretty slow because the interest rates have dampened it, but there’s a solid market down here,” Childs says. Homes in the area stay on the market for 47 days on average, compared to the national average of 49 days.

Centerfield City Park, Palisades State Park and Manti-La Sal National Forest

Central to the community, Centerfield City Park offers a ballfield, a basketball court, a playground and a picnic pavilion, which is available to rent. Palisades State Park, about 10 miles east of Centerfield, features a reservoir, with swimming and kayaking. The park also has an 18-hole golf course. Manti-La Sal National Forest is about 15 miles east of Centerfield and provides ample recreation, covering over 1.2 million acres. “The most popular thing is for people to go up to the mountains. They have a lot of ATV trails; most people around here own some sort of ATV and go up and camp and ride their vehicles around,” Childs says. The area also has fishing and hiking, with overlooks of the La Sal Mountains.

Public schools from Gunnison Valley Elementary to Gunnison Valley High

On Niche, Gunnison Valley Elementary School has a B-minus rating. Gunnison Valley Middle School has a C-plus, while Gunnison Valley High School earns a B-minus. The high school has unique courses, including mechanical engineering, welding, financial literacy and circuit training.

Tacos La Hacienda and more businesses in Gunnison

The countryside community doesn’t have any shopping centers and few businesses. “We do not have much as far as food establishments. People normally go south or north 30 minutes to go out to a really nice restaurant,” Childs says. Centerfield’s only dining spot is Tacos La Hacienda, a food truck with authentic Mexican food and outdoor seating on the area’s north side. Another option is the laidback fast-food restaurant Shelle's, only a mile north of the community. For grocery shopping, Gunnison Market is also about a mile away from Centerfield.

Community events like the Wild Pumpkin Adventure and the Tree Lighting Ceremony

Every year, Beck Family Farms hosts the Wild Pumpkin Adventure from mid-September through October. The fall-themed activities include a pumpkin patch, a hay bale maze and a petting zoo. At the Tree Lighting Ceremony, there’s a visit from Santa and Christmas carols in early December.

Driving to Gunnison, Salt Lake City and St. George

Centerfield is about 25 miles south of Ephraim, the largest city in the county. “We're right in the center of Utah, and Highway 89 goes through us. We’re two hours south of Salt Lake City and 2.5 hours north of St. George,” Childs says. For commercial flights, the Salt Lake City International Airport is about 130 miles away from the community.
