Ample parks and cul de sacs alongside rural Fairfax
Located in Fairfax County, Centreville is a census-designated place with a population of about 74,000 residents. Centreville earned its name in the late 1700s, its equidistance from major cities like Washington, D.C., Leesburg, Georgetown and Alexandria making it a central spot for major roadways to converge. Today, the suburb's location is still a primary consideration for the commuters who travel throughout northern Virginia and D.C. Set 25 miles west of the nation's capital, this area’s various roads intertwine with the interstate in a web of residential traffic that nudges drivers toward its restaurants and retailers. As roads branch out, winding cul de sacs of single-family homes take shape. Townhouses intermingle with various parks all along Centreville’s edges.
While it’s common for residents to leave Centreville for work, there are a few major companies in the area. The data consulting firm Avenu Insights & Analytics and vehicle information database Carfax are both headquartered in Centreville.

Subdivisions of townhouses and Colonial Revivals
Though houses tend to be cheaper than other parts of Northern Virginia, the median listing prices in Centreville are well above the state and national average. In 2024, the median home listing price was about $570,000, while Virginia’s median was about $390,000, and the national median was $430,000.
Subdivisions of colonial-inspired townhouses and single-family homes, most of which were built after the 1980s, make up Centreville’s housing stock. “People used to think of Centreville as a small area that was way west of Washington. It’s grown a lot in the past 20 years, but most of the development has been houses,” says Marjorie Rojas-Suarez, a Realtor with Spring Hill Real Estate who's lived in Centreville for over 30 years. “There aren’t many more places in the area to build, really.” Townhouses usually cost between $400,000 and $700,000, while large Colonial Revivals are usually priced between $750,000 and $1.2 million.

Well-maintained public green spaces in Centreville
One of the largest outdoor spaces in the area is Bull Run Regional Park, a 1,500-acre park with a network of nature trails that lead through woods and meadows. Residents can play disc golf on the 18-hole course, take their kids to the playground, hang out at the picnic shelters, or go camping at the campground. During the summer, the Atlantis Waterpark at Bull Run East is particularly popular, where kids glide down brightly colored slides, play in the splash park and swim in the pool. Community members also enjoy the park during the colder months, as the park’s 2.5-mile-long holiday lighting display runs from November to early January. Other green spaces with nature trails that follow small streams, like Cub Run Stream Valley Park, can be found throughout Centreville. Public parks with playgrounds, basketball courts and a grassy field where kids can kick around a soccer ball are also scattered throughout the community.

Korean restaurants and convenient supermarkets
Since the area's development has focused on residences, Rojas-Suarez says there isn't a major dining scene in Centreville. "We don't have a town center with tons of stores and restaurants like Fairfax or Gainesville," she adds. Many will drive to these nearby cities for more options, but there are some local eateries in the community. Due to its high Korean American population, Centreville has more than a dozen combined Korean restaurants and groceries for locals to enjoy. Most dining and shopping spots are sequestered at the intersection of Routes 28 and 29. The vibe is more mom-and-pop, with very few fast-food chains in the area. Giant and Trader Joe’s provide the grocery basics, while more specialty packaged goods and meats can be found at the H Mart.

Seasonal gatherings at nearby wineries and farms
Centreville experiences all four seasons, including hot and humid summers. Since Centreville borders areas with more farmland and space, many community events happen outdoors. The Winery at Bull Run is a popular spot to sip locally fermented glasses of wine at outdoor picnic tables, enjoying sweeping views of the vineyard. Residents go to the winery for weekly events, like Thursday trivia nights and Friday food trucks and live musical performances. Seasonally, joggers can participate in the winery’s Thanksgiving-themed turkey trot, and shoppers can find artisanal, homemade gifts at the holiday vendor fair.
Cox Farms is an autumnal destination with both family-friendly activities and haunted attractions. The fall festival has stations selling apple cider donuts, slides, hayrides, a pumpkin patch and a petting zoo with goats. After nightfall, there are spookier attractions, like a fear forest and a haunted corn maze with costumed actors.

A reasonable commute to Washington, D.C.
Interstate 66 carves through Centreville, offering a direct route to Washington, D.C. The district is about 25 miles northeast of the area, meaning it can take half to drive there without traffic, but the high traffic volume in northern Virginia usually makes the drive much longer. “There are the HOV toll lanes, but with dynamic pricing, they can get very expensive,” Rojas-Suarez says. “The lanes are good if you have an emergency, but a lot of people take the Metro because at least then you know how much you’re going to pay.” There aren’t Metrorail stations in Centreville, but there are stations with park-and-ride lots in Herndon and Vienna, which are both about 11 miles from the area. Commuters may board the Orange Line in Vienna or the Silver Line in Herndon. People can also get to the Metrorail stations via bus, as the Fairfax Connector system has several stops throughout the area. For longer trips, there’s the Dulles International Airport, which is 11 miles north of Centreville. Since the community is close to the Dulles International Airport, residents may see and hear some planes flying overhead.
Centreville’s crime rate
Centreville’s crime rate is lower than both the national average and that of nearby Washington, D.C. According to the CAP Index, residents in nearly all of Centreville's eight neighborhoods have a substantially lower-than-average risk of being the victim of a crime. Centre Ridge, which rests on the area’s southwest end, carries a slightly higher CAP risk score compared to its sister neighborhoods. Rates of robbery, motor vehicle theft and larceny are on par with the national average, but the projected risk of other crimes committed remains low. According to data from the Fairfax County Police Department’s annual reports, crimes against property in all of Fairfax County increased 5.5% between 2022 and 2023. Crimes against persons for all of Fairfax County increased 12.5% between 2022 and 2023.
