Chandler offers small-town living close to Evansville
The small Warrick County town of Chandler is surrounded by soybeans and cornfields, offering locals a more rural lifestyle without sacrificing convenience to urban amenities. “It’s just a quiet place, a good place to live and real convenient,” says Ron Whitledge, a town council member who’s lived in Chandler for more than 50 years. He says most folks move here for the proximity to Evansville, less than 20 miles away. The bigger city has regional employers in the healthcare and education industries, as well as cultural attractions like the Children’s Museum of Evansville and Victory Theatre, a live performance venue.
A variety of single-family home styles
These narrow streets are lined with tall sassafras and sycamore trees, shading broad front lawns. Minimal Traditional cottages, Cape Cods, Colonial Revivals and ranch-style homes are common in the middle of town. On the outskirts, new developments like Saddlebrooke Estates are under construction, with farmhouse and Craftsman-inspired New Traditional homes. Prices start under $100,000 and rise to about $550,000. Custom-built estates with several acres of land can sell for between $950,000 and more than $1 million. Pigeon Creek and streams nearby are prone to flooding. Winters are chilly with some snowfall, and summers are hot and humid. Warrick County is vulnerable to tornadoes.
Highly rated Warrick County School Corporation schools
Chandler is zoned to the Warrick County School Corporation, which includes Chandler Elementary, Castle North Middle and Castle High. Chandler Elementary earns a B-plus grade from Niche. The middle and high schools earn A-minuses. Castle High offers dual enrollment classes at Ivy Tech Community College and the University of Southern Indiana, which are based in Evansville. USI also offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs in more than 130 areas of study.
Outdoor recreation at Chandler parks, nearby Quail Crossing Golf Club
Chandler Sports Park is on the southeast side of town, a few blocks from the Newburgh Chandler Public Library. The 34-acre park has a community center, picnic shelter and lighted baseball diamonds. It also hosts annual events, like Chandler Celebration Days, a weekend-long fall festival with foot races, a parade, a beauty pageant, music and more. Chandler Town Park also has a picnic shelter, along with a basketball court and playgrounds. The small lake is stocked with bass, catfish and bluegill. The public, 18-hole course at Boonville’s Quail Crossing Golf Club is a few miles east.
Shopping/dining on Lincoln Avenue and in Evansville, Newburgh
“There’s not a whole lot going on here in terms of restaurants and much entertainment, except the parks. But we’re not looking for entertainment, and restaurants are close in Evansville and Newburgh,” Whitledge says. There are a few eateries in Chandler, including Casey’s and Subway on Lincoln Avenue, near the Dollar General. Lakeview Tavern is a casual pub known for live music and karaoke nights. Whitledge recommends Turoni’s Pizzery & Brewery, a small regional chain with several locations in Evansville and Newburgh. For groceries and other essentials, there’s a Walmart Supercenter in Boonville, around 4 miles away.
Quick access to Evansville area airport, hospitals and highways
Warrick Area Transit System, known locally as WATS, provides bus service to the area, with routes to Newburgh and Boonville. Evansville Regional Airport is about 11 miles away, on the north side of Evansville. It’s usually a 20-minute drive without traffic on Heim Road, Millersburg Road or State Road 57. Deaconess Gateway Hospital and Ascension St. Vincent Evansville, top regional employers in Evansville, are within about 11 miles of most homes. State Road 62 runs southwest toward Interstate 69, which heads north toward Indianapolis.
