Dynamic, historic, and full of charm
One of the oldest neighborhoods in all of Charleston, Harleston Village features tree-lined residential streets and a unique charm exclusive to the Charleston region. First developed in 1770, the neighborhood has since established itself as one of the most noteworthy around. Home to the College of Charleston, Harleston Village is a prime location packed with historical landmarks and unique amenities—all while remaining tucked away and to the east of tourist-packed King Street. “It’s an old neighborhood, but in some ways it’s one of our newest,” says Mary Lou Wertz, real estate agent with Maison Real Estate and longtime resident of Charleston. “It’s a really dynamic neighborhood that’s always growing and expanding.” With its prime location, historical landmarks and charming residents, Harleston Village makes its case as one of the most interesting neighborhoods in all of Charleston.

Home of the Charleston single house
A blend of commercial and residential properties, Harleston Village maintains the classic style and serene lifestyle the area is known for thanks in part to its architecture. Among the many vintage styles, the Charleston single house—a unique, local form of house featuring a narrow build, gabled, and often with piazzas—can be found. “There’s a lot of classic architecture in Harleston, like Charleston singles,” says Wertz. “But you also have Victorian, Federal, and more.” In addition to classic styles such as these, homebuyers can find condominiums and townhouses. Single-family homes can be hard to come by in Harleston, in part because of how many older homes had been refashioned into student housing for nearby College of Charleston—something that Wertz says is changing. “Many of the large, more vintage homes were converted into student housing years back,” says Wertz. “But new construction on things like townhouses and condos means that some of those homes are being turned back into single-family residences.” Prices for a single-family, 3-bedroom home can range from $615,000 for a Charleston single house to $3.5 million for something like a restored Italianate-style manor. Similarly sized condos and townhouses generally range from $350,000 to $1 million. Larger homes can go for upwards of $5 million, and usually feature wrought-iron fences, wrap-around porches, and stately columns.
Colonial Park Lake is the go-to gathering spot
Located at the center of the neighborhood, Colonial Park Lake is one of the neighborhood’s key features. Offering a serene, picturesque splash of green amongst Charleston’s urban atmosphere, the lake offers a wide walking path with dozens of flower beds planted alongside it. Nearby Moultrie Park features an interactive playground, along with pickleball courts. “Both of the parks are great for congregating,” says Wertz. “You can do things like yoga at Colonial Lake, and I’ve never seen the Moultrie Park pickleball courts empty.” For those looking for a clear view of the Ashley River, Alberta Long Park is located on the west side of the neighborhood.
