Riverland Terrace
An eclectic mix of classic architecture
With roughly half of Riverland Terrace surrounded by water, the appeal of the neighborhood is its blend of architecture with the waterfront location. There’s a mix of housing styles here dating to the 1930s and 1940s, including cottages, colonials, bungalows and even some modern farmhouses. “It’s an older, quirky, fun neighborhood,” Scherl says. “There’s Craftsman cottages, old builds and newer builds, but all with the same aesthetics. It has a strong price point, it’s one of the more expensive areas and there’s no HOA, so it has a fun funkiness with sculptures and boats.” Prices typically start between $550,000 and $700,000 and can run all the way up to over $1 million, especially for those on the water. Exterior features, from circular driveways to ivy-covered walls to dormer windows, add personal touches to the properties here.Nearby schools held in high regard
No schools are located within the boundaries of Riverland Terrace, but Harbor View Elementary View is close by and rated an A-minus by Niche. Niche also ranks Harbor View in its top 100 elementary schools in South Carolina, while it gives its successor in Camp Road Middle School an A-minus as well for sixth through eighth grades. James Island Charter High School serves grades nine through 12 and receives a B-plus from Niche, offering varsity and junior varsity levels in sports like football, tennis and soccer.Parks, golf and water views
An assortment of outdoor recreation awaits Riverland Terrace residents. Medway and Plymouth Parks are located within its boundaries, with Plymouth lying on Wappoo Creek on the northern end. Children can clamber onto the playground evocative of ships from days gone by, and all ages can sit back on the benches along the water and watch the sunset or the travels of boats sailing past. Plymouth also features a boat ramp into the Wappoo. Less than five minutes south, Medway Park is near the community’s entrance and offers fields for baseball and kickball, courts for shooting hoops and a community garden. Across Maybank Highway sits the City of Charleston Municipal Golf Course, or “Muni” to locals.A variety of food styles around Riverland Terrace
Within the Pour House, Kwei Fei serves Sichuan food, while coffee can be found at Huriyali Riverland American fare is available at Maybank Public House. “There’s a really popular restaurant that just opened up called The James,” Scherl says. “It’s more of a high-end steaks, crab cakes and shrimp place, it’s a bit pricey but the food is really good.” Watch the game at Charleston Sports Pub, grab general needs at Whole Foods or take a furry friend to Crewlala Dog Salon. At the James Island Shopping Center, find a Harris Teeter, Maple Street Biscuit Company and Muddy Waters Coffee Bar.Tending to movie watchlists and green thumbs
Residents can check out indie films and blockbusters alike at the Terrace Theater, which is also where the yearly Charleston Film Festival is held. “It’s an older movie theater and they only have three or four screens, so it feels like you’re going back in time a little bit,” Scherl says. “It’s got that old feeling to it, but it’s a cool place and serves wine and beer.” Medway Park also has a community garden, while the Charleston Flower Market is one of the most popular florists in the area. “There’s the golf course, boat ramp, dog park and all the bars, restaurants, movies, nightlife, bands and music,” Scherl says. “I don’t know what else someone could need.”Getting around via multiple transportation methods
The amenity-filled Charleston Peninsula area is only about 10 minutes away, and Charleston Harbor is just a boat ride away. “It’s 10 minutes to downtown and 15 minutes to the beach,” Scherl says. “People can go fishing, cruising and pleasure boating. It’s close to all the tourist attractions, everything and anything within a very close proximity.” Maybank Highway runs to the south and extends across the Stono River to the west, and via the James Island Expressway residents can reach Charleston.
