A central Charleston hub
Home to the West Virginia State Capitol building, the Governor's Mansion and surrounding government offices, East End is a central Charleston neighborhood known for its historic homes, preservation efforts, walkability and proximity to Downtown. “The people that gravitate towards the East End are looking for the charm of the old historic era,” says Nadia Hardy, a real estate agent with Re/Max Real Estate Unlimited. Though East Enders' connection to Downtown links them to a broad array of restaurants and boutiques, they also enjoy their own neighborhood spots along U.S. Route 60.
Historic home alterations require approval
The East End Historic District and an adjacent expansion area are two of the city's nine designated historic zones. The original district, generally two and a half blocks upland from Kanawha River between U.S. 60 and Morris Street requires approval from an architectural review committee before outdoor renovations or changes can be made to existing buildings -- a rule that isn't enforced in the expansion area or anywhere else in town. New buildings, likewise, must be designed to conform to the "sense of time and space,'' according to a governing city document. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, East End consists of about 400 homes and buildings that match the original design and feel. Among the home styles: Queen Anne, Greek Revival, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, Foursquare and bungalows. "They try to keep the integrity of the time with the home,” Hardy said. Structures in East End were built generally between the late 19th century through the 1920s, and most on lots higher than the street level, requiring a few steps up on walkways leading from the sidewalk to the front door. Sidewalks along neighborhood streets connect to the city's riverfront walkway across Kanawha Boulevard. Prices range from about $190,000 to about $475,000, depending on size.

The riverfront is no more than a few blocks away
East End Community Park greets visitors with its archway entrance and wrought iron gates. This small neighborhood plaza features an outdoor gym and picnic tables. About a block away is Laidley Field, a track-and-field and football stadium that's home of the University of Charleston, the campus of which is immediately across the Kanawha River from East End. In Downtown Charleston, Haddad River Front Park’s amphitheater hosts annual events and concerts. The bandshell sits right up against the river as the colorful lights surrounding the stage glow and reflect on the water. With a capacity of 2,500, locals can enjoy the free concerts held here every Friday from Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day. The park’s 4.5-mile trail runs parallel to the river, creating a serene riverside trek. “There's a great walking area right beside Kanawha,” says Hardy. “You go in the late afternoon or early evening, and you’ll see people jogging and walking along the path.”

Downtown is close, but neighborhood spots are closer
Shopping and dining options line the thoroughfare of U.S. Route 60 which passes through the neighborhood, then jogs around the Capitol complex near the West Virginia Governor's Mansion and takes a route along the river. Main Kwong Chinese Restaurant serves no-frills Chinese food from a red brick building along the main drag. For a night out, the aptly named East End Pub delivers a hometown bar feel at the eastern corner of the neighborhood, though it's about 2 miles from the westernmost point in East End. West of the neighborhood is Capitol Market, an indoor-outdoor farmers market housed in a turn-of-the-century train station. “Capitol Market is always fabulous,” says Hardy. “People go up there on Saturdays. There are tons of vendors selling fresh fruits and vegetables. It's got everything you could possibly want.”

Getting around isn't difficult
Bordered by Downtown Charleston to the west, Interstate 64 to the northeast and bisected by U.S. Route 60, East End is well connected to the greater Charleston area. The Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation Authority provides service through several bus stops lining Washington Street, Virginia Street and Quarrier Street. Cyclists can take a scenic ride overlooking the waterfront on Kanawha Boulevard East. The West Virginia International Yeager Airport is 3.5 miles northeast.
