Life a little out of the city
At the edge of Charleston, North Charleston features a more spread-out lifestyle when compared to denser communities closer to the city center. “It's very easy to get to everywhere in the area from there,” says Marie McDavid, a Realtor with Property Elite LLC. “You’re in the city but on the outskirts of it— so you feel like you’re close to everything without being as condensed.” McDavid also notes that traffic is rarely problematic. Though easy access to city amenities is a plus, North Charleston has a few attractions of its own as it is home to the largest community center in the city as well as a handful of unique dining spots ranging from international eats to retro diners.

New traditional and ranch-style homes
Houses lie on gridded streets south of Seventh Avenue, while homes north of the thoroughfare lie along winding roads bordered by streams that feed into the Kanawha River. New traditional and ranch-style homes on smaller lots are prevalent toward the south, while homes in the north have a more spread-out suburban feel. “You have older homes in North Charleston, but they are very moderately priced for the area, so a lot of people like to buy there because they can get a nice mid-entry for a lower cost than they would in the city of Charleston,” says McDavid. Houses needing renovation sell for between $10,000 to $50,000. Turn-key homes go for $60,000 to $160,000 on average.

The North Charleston Community Center and nearby parks
The North Charleston Community Center covers 24,000 square feet, offering a range of activities and events for all ages. “The community center is a big deal,” says McDavid. “It’s the biggest community center in Charleston. There’s basketball training, there's basketball camps, they do a lot of youth stuff over there.” Inside amenities include a gym, various fitness rooms and a game room inside, while the outdoors offers basketball courts, baseball fields, two playgrounds and a pool. The center also hosts the Capital City Cougars Youth Football. Though some outdoor fields require scheduling in advance, all facilities are free of charge. South of the neighborhood is Magic Island Park, a riverside playground with a splash pad, walking trails and sprawling green lawns. Every Saturday morning, the park hosts the Charleston Parkrun, a free 5K along Kanawha Boulevard.

From international fare to 1950's diner food
Hot Diggity Dogs serves hot dogs, hamburgers and breakfast in a low-key, brick building with a bit of a 1950s flair. “It's like this really small little hole-in-wall place. People love it,” says McDavid. “It's definitely good if you're looking for that kind of old-fashioned diner-y food.” Los Amigos Méxican Restaurant is another local spot. “It’s really good— you get a lot more food for your money there, so prices are very reasonable, and portion sizes are great,” says McDavid. Though North Charleston has a handful of restaurants, shopping requires a trip south toward downtown. There's a Kroger on Delaware Avenue about 2 miles south.

Travel by car or bus
Bisected by Seventh Avenue and bordered by County Route 21 to the east, North Charleston has a direct connection to downtown. Though most residents rely on cars to get around, the Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation Authority provides service through several bus stops along Seventh Avenue. The West Virginia International Yeager Airport is about 7 miles east of the neighborhood.
Flood risk and noise
Many homes south of Seventh Avenue are at risk for flooding due to proximity to the Kanawha River, which borders the neighborhood to the south. A rail line running parallel to Third Avenue poses a noise risk as well. A city sewage-treatment plant is adjacent to homes near 26th Street West, and a chemical plant operates on Blaine Island, in the Kanawha River, just to the south. A related facility is on the northern bank of the river, also in the neighborhood.
