Semi-suburban hideaways in the peaks over downtown Charleston
In many U.S. cities, living near the airport isn't always favored. But some residents of Oakridge-Greenbrier relish the occasional interruptions of silence as biplanes and commercial jets alike pass overhead to land at West Virginia's busiest airport. Others never hear them at all beneath the canopy of tulip poplars and sycamore trees. Perched above Charleston's downtown and East End neighborhoods, this leafy meander of subdivisions, business parks and wild areas has modernized more than some other hilltop hideaways with easy access to Charleston's core neighborhoods. "Greenbrier Street takes you to the airport, and there are a lot of nice subdivisions off of that road that are sought after, especially Woodbridge," says Realtor Lisa Eden of Old Colony Realtors.
Airport views from newer homes in Woodbridge
Development began in the early 20th century as Colonial Revival homes slowly dotted the hills and hollers of Oakridge-Greenbrier. Some have not been maintained over the decades, resulting in a few rehabbed properties. Investors have paid between $65,000 and $150,000 for such options. Then the airport was built in the mid-1940s, and development began to accelerate with the construction of several split-levels and ranch-style homes. Today, these sell for between $150,000 and $250,000. Residential growth continued through the 90s and early 2000s with the construction of new traditional homes in small subdivisions, which tend to be the most popular option today. Some subdivisions, like Woodbridge, contain a mix of single-family houses and attached townhouses, both with unique views and idiosyncrasies. "You actually can see the airport from there," Eden says. "There are some houses in that neighborhood that need lights on top of them so the planes clear as they're landing." New traditional single-family homes typically sell for between $275,000 and $450,000, while similarly styled townhouses have sold for between $170,000 and $340,000.

Locals head there to visit classic watering holes and taverns, like the Empty Glass or the Red Carpet Lounge. Groceries are a bit further away. The closest options are a Piggly Wiggly and a Kroger that both sit across the Elk River in the West End neighborhood.

Easy drives to supermarkets in the West End
Reaching the supermarkets across the Elk River from Oakridge-Greenbrier isn't too difficult with two access ramps to Interstate 64. But it does heavily depend on a vehicle considering the Elk River's few pedestrian crossings. Bus routes provide an alternative for those who don't own a car. The stretch of I-64 abutting the neighborhood is usually light with traffic. But rush hour traffic at I-64's interchange with Interstate 77 creates occasional slowdowns that creep past Oakridge-Greenbrier's access ramps.
