Country Club Heights
Old homes with character and updated new builds
Leafy green plants line the winding roadways of this established community. “It’s a quaint, older Charlotte neighborhood. A lot of these homes are bungalows from the 1950s, so if you’re looking for a neighborhood with a little more character than your typical stick-built home, it’s a good pick,” says Weiss. However, with the area’s recent swell in popularity, a wealth of new and renovated properties have been hitting the market. These newly remodeled homes add extra space and put a modern Craftsman spin on the neighborhood's classic midcentury structures. While older homes can sell for between $200,000 and $500,000 depending on condition, new houses and complete remodels list at $750,000 and can climb to $1.5 million. The neighborhood also has some multifamily offerings, including brand-new townhouses with modern amenities priced in the $500,000s.Near NoDa and Plaza Midwood dining
Country Club Heights is sandwiched between two of Charlotte’s trendiest areas. To the north is NoDa, Charlotte’s quirky arts district. A night out in this neighborhood isn’t complete without a visit to Neighborhood Theater for a live show or a trip to award-winning restaurants such as Haberdish. To the east is Plaza Midwood, another eclectic hub for locally owned shops and restaurants. Midwood Smokehouse is known across the city as one of Charlotte’s best barbecue spots. The local craft beer scene is nothing to sneer at either, with brewers like Legion and Resident Culture setting up shop in the area. “I wouldn’t say Plaza Midwood is necessarily walkable from most homes. I mean, some people would walk, but I wouldn’t,” says Lara Bucci, a Realtor with Savvy + Co. Real Estate who lives in the area. “But it’s a quick Uber ride if you don’t want to bother with parking.” There’s also a Harris Teeter for easy grocery runs, and a vibrant array of international cuisines await even closer to home on Central Avenue. This main thoroughfare has a congregation of global markets, while the Good Wurst Company serves up handmade sausages and Belgian frites. From Country Club Heights, residents can pick any direction and encounter no shortage of culinary options.A private country club at the heart of the neighborhood
The neighborhood encircles Charlotte Country Club, whose 250-acre grounds were founded in 1910. This prestigious private club is touted as one of Charlotte’s most elite and features a stately clubhouse equipped with a range of sporting facilities. Its 18-hole golf course was originally designed by celebrated course architect Donald Ross, and Golf Digest awarded the restoration of Ross' design with its Best New Remodel award in 2009.Room to garden and roam
Country Club Heights lays claim to the oldest community garden in Charlotte. Nestled off of Dunlavin Way and framed by dense forestry, the garden is spacious and well-tended. Residents reserve plots to nurture year-round. Up north is Shamrock Park, a hub for community events such as summer movie nights in the park and a springtime Easter egg hunt. The park’s playground is ever-popular with kids, and the native plant garden offers a peaceful respite. On the opposite end of the neighborhood, hidden beneath blossoming trees and framed by rustic fence posts, is an entrance to the scenic Briar Creek Greenway. This half-mile trail is shaded by leafy canopies, inviting neighbors to get out and go for a stroll behind the residential streets.Annual neighborhood festivities and monthly meetups
The Country Club Heights Neighborhood Association is active and involved, organizing an array of events and activities to get neighbors involved. The community kickball league hosts low-stakes games once a month for some good-natured competitive fun. However, the neighborhood’s biggest bash is the annual Festival in the Heights. Vendors and food trucks set up shop in Shamrock Park for a day of live music and family-friendly activities, all with the goal of raising money for local schools. Two elementary schools serve young students
All homes in the neighborhood are zoned to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. In the northern half, students are likely to attend Shamrock Gardens Elementary, which scores a B from Niche. To the south, parents walk the kids to school at Merry Oaks International Academy Elementary. This school earns a C grade and aims to cultivate a diverse community, touting a student body that hails from 28 countries and speaks more than 35 languages. No matter where kids get their start, they’ll continue learning at Eastway Middle and Garinger High, both of which receive a C from Niche. All four schools are within 2 miles of the neighborhood.Cars are necessary, but commutes are short
Uptown Charlotte is a 5-mile drive directly west. Residents can bypass the traffic along major thoroughfares by taking Shamrock Drive to Parkwood Avenue. Or they can head down Independence Boulevard to where it funnels into I-277. Although folks need a car to get around from this neighborhood, there are bike lanes and Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) bus stops along Central Avenue.
