New homes arrive as the neighborhood gets noticed
Past the industrial spaces and renovated warehouses, rows of homes fan out along the wide residential streets. Streetlamps and telephone poles tower alongside mature oaks and maples, with s dense forest canopy peeking out above the rooftops. According to McCracken, the neighborhood is one in transition. “If you drive through, you’ll see new houses, houses that have been completely remodeled, houses that are being torn down and houses that haven’t been touched since the 1960s,” she says. While some ranch-style homes and bungalows date as far back as the early 20th century, an increasing number of sleek, modern builds with Craftsman-inspired stylings have been hitting the market. While the median price for the neighborhood is roughly $330,000, these new builds can be priced well over $400,000 — considered by some to still be a fair deal for the area. “You can still get homes with decent square footage within the $400,000 range, which is pretty hard to find that close to Uptown,” McCracken says. “You head over to NoDa or Plaza Midwood, and for the same size house, you’re getting priced out of the area.” On the other hand, properties needing some renovations can sell for $200,000 or less.A fresh coat of paint for a community park
A refresh of the neighborhood park, Druid Hills Park, is slated for completion in 2024. Renovations included upgrades to the basketball court and playground, in addition to new landscaping and paved pathways to create shaded picnic spots. In the meantime, other nearby parks, such as Anita Stroud Park, can provide a daily dose of the outdoors.Camp North End is a creative destination
People travel to Druid Hills from all over Charlotte to visit Camp North End, a vibrant industrial complex with food stalls, public art and shops. The large, multi-warehouse compound originally operated as a World War II-era missile factory. Nowadays, it’s a destination for events and independent shopping and dining hotspots. Specialty stores abound: That’s Novel Books is perfect for avid readers looking for their next page-turner, while Grow caters to those with a green thumb. Several art studios and galleries make their home in Camp North End, including Dupp & Swat. Espresso lovers can sip on Hex Coffee’s fresh-roasted blends, while beer nerds can check out the draft list at Free Range Brewing. Walk-up food stalls span Latin American to Japanese flavors, and there are also some noteworthy sit-down restaurants. James Beard-nominated chef Gregory Collier and his wife Subrina Collier have recently closed Leah & Louise, but they are still the energizing force behind the BayHaven Food and Wine Fest, one of the many annual events that take place at Camp North End. Active residents can jump in with one of the running clubs or yoga groups that meet up in the Boileryard and Ford Green. On Thursday evenings, the North End Farmers Market means fresh produce and artisan goods are on offer.A prime location, 2 miles from Uptown
Druid Hills is only two miles from Uptown Charlotte via Graham Street, making it convenient for commuters. The neighborhood is considered fairly walkable and bike-able, with Charlotte Area Transit buses providing service from Uptown to UNC Charlotte. To get around the greater metro, drivers can easily hop on Interstates 277 and 77 at the nearby interchange, putting them roughly 10 miles from Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
Public schools close to home
