East Charlotte suburb with a tucked-away feel
Hickory Grove harnesses the pastoral landscape of its farmland past. Roughly 9 miles east of Uptown, this established neighborhood south of Reedy Creek Nature Preserve is known for its lakes, ponds and dense tree cover. “You get a lot of peace and quiet,” says Angie Castro, a Realtor and broker in charge at Monarch Group Realty. “You feel like you’re far away from the city, but you’re really not, and the lots are so spacious you don’t have neighbors on top of you.” Castro, who lives near the neighborhood, adds that Hickory Grove is experiencing a trend of renovation and new construction. “There’s a mixture of people moving in from out of town and people who have owned for a long time and know everybody.” More than a dozen houses of worship dot the area, including Hickory Grove Baptist Church. “A lot of people in the neighborhood go to the church. It is a huge, huge church,” Castro says.

A blend of midcentury and New Traditional styles surrounded by trees
Meandering streets traverse Hickory Grove’s wooded rolling valleys. The lush tree cover changes from deep shades of green to bright pops of red, yellow and orange in the fall. Largely developed between the 1950s and 1970s, the neighborhood primarily features brick ranch-style homes, split-levels and Colonial Revivals resting on ½ acre lots. With no homeowners associations, these spacious properties are landscaped to individual taste. Some backing up to Delta and Linda Lakes feature small docks. While exteriors are largely unchanged, Castro says many buyers renovate inside. “A lot of these homes are grand and well maintained, just outdated,” she says. Up-to-date New Traditional designs and newly built homes are popping up in the neighborhood’s northern and southern ends. Most single-family homes fall between $350,000 and $475,000, but new construction starts at $500,000 and can reach $650,000. Castro notes, “Homes in South Charlotte will run you twice the price.” There are also condos available from $145,000 to $200,000.

Grove Park Elementary provides a new place to learn
Hickory Grove is zoned for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The recently built Grove Park Elementary opened for the first time in August of 2023. The school, not yet rated by Niche, is relieving overcrowding at three other schools and features 45 colorful classrooms. “The community is excited about the new school. The city is really investing in this side of town,” Castro says. Northridge Middle sits next door. The magnet school, earning a C-plus, incorporates computer science and coding into its curriculum and features a makerspace lab. Rocky River High is about 9 miles away. The C-plus-rated school offers various extracurricular activities, from e-sports and theatre clubs to JROTC and National Honor Society. Hickory Grove Christian School, which receives an A rating, and The Nest Academy, which is unrated, are nearby private options. Castro says many neighborhood families opt for public charter schools like Commonwealth High School, earning a C-minus.

Families connect with nature at Reedy Creek Nature Preserve
Delta Creek Park sits in the heart of the neighborhood. The small green space near Linda Lake features a short, paved walking path that passes by a carved wood sculpture of woodland animals resting on a hollow tree stump. Reedy Creek Nature Center and Preserve brushes against the neighborhood’s north end, offering 927 acres of forested land to explore on over 10 miles of wooded trails. The historic preserve has been carefully tended since the early 1700s and is teeming with wildlife, some of which can be seen up close at the nature center. Next door is Reedy Creek Park, popular for disc golf, volleyball and cricket. The Play 60 Challenge Course is a unique feature that lets visitors train like the Carolina Panthers Football team by taking on an obstacle course that tests strength, agility and speed. South of the neighborhood, golfers go for rounds at the public 18-hole Charles T. Myer Golf Course.

Commuting to Uptown and University City
Hickory Grove may offer a tucked-away feel. However, it’s only about 9 miles from Charlotte’s Center City. “We have a bus system, but you will definitely need a car,” Castro says. “You’re right on E W.T. Harris Boulevard, so you can get to Plaza really quickly and get into town. Then you have Independence Boulevard.” East W. T. Harris Boulevard connects to University City and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, just over 5 miles north. University City, the neighborhood surrounding the UNCC campus, is one of the fastest-growing communities in the city and has cultivated a lively student culture with bars, dining hotspots and plenty of retail. This booming area is also home to more than 20 regional offices for Fortune 500 companies and a Lynx Blue Line light rail extension that connects to Uptown Charlotte. The Interstate 485 loop is a few miles west. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is roughly a 16 to 19-mile drive, depending on the route.
