Established enclave with a lot on offer
Less than 10 miles southeast of Uptown Charlotte is Idlewild South, an established neighborhood in a still-growing area. “It’s not a new part of Charlotte; it’s been around for a while,” says Michael Calabrese, a broker with Prism Properties and Development. “It has everything: condos, townhouses and single-family homes. There are small houses and big houses, assisted living areas and daycares. In that part of town, you’ve got everything for all ranges and stages of life.” Homebuyers choose Idlewild South because it’s close to everything they need in day-to-day life, whether that’s parks, libraries, grocery stores or diverse dining spots. And residents don’t have to break the bank to find convenient living — homes in Idlewild South typically sell below the Charlotte metro median.

A range of home styles from 1960 to today
While retail and apartments make up much of this neighborhood, residential development in Idlewild South first started picking up steam in the 1960s and has continued steadily into today. “All the homes have character and charm. Not one is the same as the next,” says Jason Morton, Realtor at Premiere South Real Estate. There’s a full range of homes, spanning from midcentury ranch-style homes on quarter-acre lots to vinyl New Traditional builds lined up in neat subdivision rows. Homebuyers seeking a turnkey move-in will find newly built properties with plenty of square footage and four to five bedrooms, typically priced near the $400,000 mark. On the opposite end, older properties can sell in the $200,000s, though the median price for the neighborhood is roughly $330,000.

Top-rated Butler High produces football stars
Parents can walk their little ones to school at Piney Grove Elementary, right in the neighborhood. The elementary school scores a C from Niche, while Albemarle Road Middle earns a C-plus. Butler High receives an A-minus and is well-known for its football team, which has a reputation for producing future NFL players. The Butler Bulldogs have a fierce rivalry against the Independence High Patriots, and games between these two titans bring out fans in droves to see who will be crowned “king of the hill” (a reference to nearby Mint Hill).

Take a trek along Campbell Creek
The Campbell Creek Greenway slices through the neighborhood, giving the area a sense of tranquility with its steadily trickling streams and towering trees. “The greenway is always being used. There are miles of it around Charlotte, and they just keep adding more and more,” Calabrese says. Residents can hop on the trail at the northern end of the neighborhood and follow it past the historic ruins of the Lucas Family Grist Mill, all the way to the McAlpine Creek Greenway, a full 6-mile trek. The path cuts through McAlpine Creek Park to the south, a sprawling 100-acre park situated against the water for scenic wildlife watching and fishing. Four-legged locals flock to the dog park, and there’s kid-friendly fun to be had on the soccer field, too. On rainy afternoons, residents can pick up a good read or attend activities at the Independence Regional Library. The library takes pride in serving a diverse community and offers language-learning programs for all ages.

From craft breweries to worldwide cuisines
Between the familiar chains and fast-food restaurants lining the major roads are a handful of homegrown businesses that locals love. Unlike many of the rustic and industrial design sensibilities of Charlotte's growing selection of taprooms, Edge City Brewery dons a bright white exterior and open-air interiors decorated with plants and art. Patrons sip on craft brews in the airy lounge or find a spot to listen to local performers on the patio during the Fridays Live concert series. Residents get their weekly shopping done while exploring international flavors at Super G Mart, whose goods and groceries span continents and cultures. Cuisines from across the globe are represented at small, family-owned restaurants nestled in nearby shopping centers, but one of the best-kept secrets in Idlewood South is the Hindu Center of Charlotte’s Indian takeout. The temple and cultural center is a hub for Charlotte’s Hindu community, and it also delivers vegetarian lunchbox meals blessed by the priest to help fund the Hindu Center’s activities.

Commuters are a direct 8-mile drive from Uptown via Independence Boulevard. Residents here typically need a car to get around, but city bus routes run along the perimeter of the neighborhood.
