Established green spaces and suburban conveniences
Mineral Springs takes its name from the Derita Mineral Springs, which were tapped in the early- to mid-1900s. At one point, 450 gallons of water a day were being bottled up and sold to the burgeoning businesses of Uptown Charlotte, which at the time lacked running water of their own. The spring house where the mineral-rich waters were pumped may have fallen into disuse, but the area still isn’t lacking in natural beauty, as a lush tree canopy continues to tower over it. “The neighborhood’s been established since about the early 1950s, and there’s still nice tree cover in that area. It’s pretty peaceful,” says Serge Mnatsakanov, a broker with Keller Williams who has sold homes in The Queen City for 9 years. Some of the area’s oldest American beech trees are found at RibbonWalk Nature Preserve, a nearby sprawling green space. But Mnatsakanov is quick to point out that, at the same time, Mineral Springs residents also enjoy a wealth of nearby suburban conveniences. “You’re close to Interstate 85, Topgolf, IKEA, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a lot of shopping and amenities,” he says, also highlighting the two nearby Lynx Blue Line stations that allow for car-free commutes.

A variety of home styles, plus townhouses and condos
Houses and streetscapes differ from subdivision to subdivision. Toward North Graham Street, buyers will find cottages and American Craftsman bungalows, some of which date to the 1950s or earlier, connected by somewhat narrow streets with minimal room for street parking. Other subdivisions are populated with 1980s and ‘90s-era Colonial Revival and midcentury ranch-style builds. Constructions are still being built through the 2020s, often following New Traditional architectural designs. Sidewalks are more common, and streets are wider, in these newer subdivisions. Regardless of a home’s age, many have mature trees in their back yards, and many sell within a month. “We don’t have a lot of inventory. If it’s on the market and priced right, it goes quickly,” says Cheri McNeal, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker who has sold homes in Charlotte for over two decades. Prices for detached homes usually range from $250,000 to $400,000. Townhouses can be found in the southwest corner of Mineral Springs, selling in the $300,000s, while condos near North Graham Street sell in the $200,000s.

A high school with a fantastic football team
The Governors Village STEM Academy’s lower and upper schools serve Kindergarten through fourth grade and fifth through eighth grade students, respectively. The lower academy receives a B-minus from Niche, while the upper academy is C-plus-rated. Julius L. Chambers High gets an overall C and is known for its football program, which has made it to the 4A state championships three times in the past six years. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is only 3 miles east.
Mineral Springs is close to the interstate and the Lynx Blue Line
Mnatsakanov notes that much of the neighborhood is “close to Interstate 85, yet far away enough that you don’t hear the noise.” Residents can ride this highway west and switch to Interstate 77 to get to Uptown Charlotte, about a 10-mile drive total. However, commuters should be prepared for heavy traffic during rush hour. For car-free travel, there’s the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) Lynx Blue Line. “Mineral Springs is a car-dependent neighborhood, but the Blue Line is good if you want to go downtown but not have to worry about the drive over,” Mnatsakanov says. By train, the trip is approximately 25 minutes.

Shopping and dining in University City
Thanks to nearby University City, locals don’t have to travel far for dining or errands. Familiar eateries include Culver’s and Outback Steakhouse, along with Mi Pueblo Mexico Grill, a casual North Carolina Tex-Mex chain. Mnatsakanov recommends Le Kebab Grill, which serves up Mediterranean favorites such as lentil soup and falafel, with plenty of halal options. These restaurants are joined by retailers and grocery stores such as IKEA, Hobby Lobby and a Walmart Supercenter. On the other side of the neighborhood is Maria’s Grill, a breakfast and brunch mainstay that doles out mouthwatering Southern classics, including country biscuits and liver mush. Concord Mills, one of the largest malls in the city, is 7 miles away via Interstate 85.

Rare plant species and long walks
RibbonWalk Nature Preserve takes its name from the private gardens of Queen Charlotte’s mother-in-law, which “ribboned” through the forest. This 188-acre nature preserve carries on this legacy, offering 3 miles of trails and an array of hardwoods and conifers, plus some of the oldest American beech trees in the area. Dogs are welcome if they’re leashed. Plant life is also plentiful at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Botanical Gardens, including threatened species such as the titan arum. Visiting the gardens is free. Hikers will also find an extensive network of trails in neighboring University City, including Mallard Creek Greenway, which stretches some 5 miles.

I wish my parents could live better and didnt have to rent, however it's ok. I work and go to school never an issue leaving out or coming home. One thing I hope to change would including it being more than one way out of the neighborhood.

The violence in the area has gone down in the past 8 to 10 years. The law enforcment may have influenced this.

When I first moved it, the same week there was a shooting however crime is going down. I still hear gunshots and see drug transactions but I am covered by the blood of Jesus so it rarely effects me.

The closest city bus stop is 30 minutes away from my house. There is no shuttle bus that comes through the neighborhood, and this an inconvenience for anyone that relies on public transportation. Also the roads leading into the neighborhood are very dangerous; especially at night. The curves are very sharp, and people drive really fast.
