Newell

Continued development in a classic sidewalk suburb
Development in the Newell area began in the 1990s and has continued steadily ever since. Turning off the main roads, tidy rows of homes line the narrow residential streets. Trees and shrubs dot the lawns, occasionally bordered by neat strips of sidewalks. While some lots are more modest, it’s possible to find homes with more than a quarter acre of room to spread out on. Each house is subtly distinct, ranging from established New Traditional builds with arched entryways and asymmetrical roofs to brand-new Craftsman-inspired constructions. Some townhouses are starting to crop up in the area, with prices beginning around $250,000. Single-family homes list at a median price of $355,000 and cap out at around $490,000.Spend time in a sprawling nature preserve
The Reedy Creek Park and Nature Center stretches along the southern end of the neighborhood. Some Newell residents can walk from their doorstep right into the 927-acre forested preserve. Locals visit from across Charlotte to explore Reedy Creek's many miles of densely wooded trails, where parkgoers might just stumble upon historical structures that date as far back as the 1700s. The waterside paths are a perfect way to escape from city life, and the park is equally popular with athletes looking to hit the disc golf course or the well-maintained cricket ground. There’s fun for the whole family, whether that means exploring the dog park with four-legged friends or spending an educational afternoon at the nature center with the kids.Conveniently close schools with charter and magnet options available
Newell is zoned to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The closest is Joseph W. Grier Academy, an elementary school that sends students on to Northridge Middle and Rocky River High. All three public schools score a C-plus from Niche. The Central Piedmont Community College's Cato Campus is also nearby, where many local high schoolers visit to earn college credits during their junior and senior years. Charter and magnet schools are also abundant through the district’s school choice program. From shopping in University City to dining in Harrisburg
“There’s a lot of restaurants in this area, especially the closer you get to the University,” Foster says. “And then when you go over to Harrisburg, there’s a lot of smaller, family-owned restaurants that are popular as well.” Folks head into University City for big-box stores and chain dining, with a Harris Teeter just down the road in the Town Center Plaza shopping center for easy grocery runs. On the other hand, Harrisburg is the go-to for local restaurants, from longtime homestyle staples such as Harrisburg Family House to hip newcomers like Percent Tap House. Closer to home, Harbor Inn Seafood has been serving the neighborhood for 20 years and received a mention in Charlotte Magazine in 2020 as one of the Queen City’s most beloved seafood spots. And when it comes to entertainment, residents don’t have to go far to find a good time. “The Charlotte Motor Speedway is right down the road. You can’t hear it from there, but it’s within close proximity,” Foster adds. “And the PNC Music Pavilion is where a lot of bands perform when they come to the area.”Uptown Charlotte is just 10 miles away
Navigating Newell is a breeze with primary connectors nearby. Residents here are a 10-mile ride from Uptown’s vibrant hotspots. Entrances to Interstates 85 and 485 are a few miles away, but locals can bypass the traffic to Center City via Old Concord Road. In University City, the LYNX Blue Line light rail stops along Tryon Street for car-free trips around the city, and plenty of commuters head to work in the area’s many business parks and health complexes surrounding UNC Charlotte. Travelers can catch select flights 10 miles away at Concord-Padgett Regional Airport or make the 18-mile drive to Charlotte Douglas International Airport for worldwide adventures.
