Newell South
Sidewalk-lined subdivisions and half-acre lots
Homebuyers flock to residences just off one of the Queen City’s most highly traveled streets for seamless commutes. But despite the busy thoroughfares and collegiate bustle just beyond, the residential streets of Newell South are quiet and winding, lined by sidewalks in some areas and dense clusters of trees in others. Prospective buyers should watch this well-positioned spot while properties are still available. "Over the last year, we've seen a little more inventory, but the great properties still sell really quickly. There's a healthy balance," says Landon Albrick, a Realtor at The Albrick Group. A simple brick ranch-style home from the 1960s with three bedrooms typically starts at $300,000. Or, buyers with extra room in the budget can seek out a newly renovated two-story home with updated appliances and a half-acre to spread out on for $500,0000. New construction homes have also been popping up throughout the neighborhood, perfect for those who want a turnkey experience with all the latest bells and whistles.Travel by car or light rail
A Charlotte central connector, North Tryon Street, extends the length of Newell South, providing a direct seven-mile route into the heart of the city. Interstate 85 entrances are also close by, allowing residents to reach the Charlotte Douglas International Airport in a 15-mile drive. Although car travel is the most popular way to get around here, residents can also find the Tom Hunter light rail station here for an easy, car-free commute into Uptown or University City, home to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte campus and the Atrium Health Hospital.Football champs attend Julius L. Chambers High
Newell South students are zoned to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, which boasts a wide range of public, charter and magnet schools. Many local students attend Newell Elementary before moving on to Martin Luther King Jr. Middle and Julius L. Chambers High. The high school is something of a football powerhouse, with the Cougars taking home back-to-back 4AA state championship titles in 2020 and 2021. The girl’s flag football team also snagged the district-wide trophy in 2022, an exciting win for the sport’s inaugural season. All three schools score a C grade from Niche.Sprawling nature preserves and indoor rec centers
Locals can get outside and hike through nearby Reedy Creek Park Nature Preserve, whose 125 acres sprawl across forests, fields, lakes and wetlands. With over 10 miles of winding trails, residents can try a new route every weekend or tackle an all-day adventure during North Carolina's mild seasons. These lush landscapes lodge some 1700s-era remnants of historical structures woven throughout the overgrown flora. Residents can explore nature even closer to home with a trailhead for the Toby Creek Greenway right next to residences along Rocky River Road. The paved, multi-use walking path spans miles and connects to the Mallard Creek Greenway while lazily meandering past UNC Charlotte’s stadiums and fields. Rainy days don’t have to stop residents from getting active with the Eastway Regional Recreation Center to the south. The facility, which was opened in 2021, features a pool with a lazy river and hosts sports leagues, classes and summer camps for kids.Shopping options abound in University City
Big-box stores line University City Boulevard and make everyday errands a breeze, whether that means grocery shopping at Harris Teeter, hunting for home goods at Target or picking up fresh furniture from Ikea. There’s even a Sam’s Club a couple of miles up the road for residents who like to stock up for home cooking. Fast food and chain restaurants abound near the University, with a handful of local spots tucked away on North Tyron Street. South 21 Jr. Family Restaurant's nostalgic diner-style eatery transports patrons to the 1950s with its classic American dishes and retro decor. This busy local spot has a long-standing history with the Charlotte community, starting with its original drive-in location on Independence Boulevard. For a fun evening out, residents head to AMF University Lanes for a night of bowling or hit the driving range at Topgolf.
