Oakhurst
Suburban Neighborhood in Charlotte, North Carolina
Mecklenburg County 28205

Old ranchers, new developments
Oakhurst is home to several new developments of single-family homes. These uniform lots offer ultra-modern geometric designs or stately homes with wrap-around porches at price points that range from $700,000 to $1 million. “The houses have a lot of character; they're not so much the cookie-cutter homes we often see in new construction,” Bisson says. “That’s a big draw for people.” Several townhouse complexes have also cropped up in recent years, with units that range from $450,000 to $600,000. With interest in the neighborhood increasing, property values are on the rise, but the neighborhood still offers some more affordable options compared to Cotswold or Chantilly. Older bungalows and ranch-style homes range from $300,000 to $500,000, usually with around a quarter acre in lot size and construction dates in the mid-1900s.Putting the "Oak" in "Oakhurst"
Oakhurst has no large green spaces, but as the name suggests, many mature oaks, as well as hickories and maples, line the streets. Residents can also claim a bit of earth to call their own at the Oakhurst community garden, which has communal beds and individual plots. And the small Oakhurst Park has a playground and multi-use field within walking distance of many residents. For community events, the Monroe Road Advocates (MoRA) group is a local non-profit that plans free summer concerts and seasonal festivals and encourages art installations. They also spearhead initiatives like native tree planting and advocating for community concerns.Walkable elementary with a STEAM focus
The Oakhurst STEAM Academy is a partial magnet school, meaning students from kindergarten through fifth grade who live in the neighborhood get the benefits of a magnet education at the school they are zoned for. The STEAM Academy receives a B-minus grade from Niche and offers an education focused specifically on science, technology, engineering, art and math. With an initiative to give every child access to their own iPad or Chromebook and an elementary computer science program, the school aims to prepare young learners to thrive in the digital age. Students move on to Eastway Middle School and then Garinger High School, both rated C.Coming soon to Monroe Road
The Oakhurst community sits along Monroe Road, which is facing several development projects in the coming years. The stretch of the road that runs through the neighborhood is slated for a streetscape overhaul, including wider sidewalks, more pedestrian crosswalks and a paved multi-use trail running parallel to the road. Construction on these improvements is projected to start in 2025. The long-discussed LYNX Silver Line light rail expansion would also stretch along Independence Boulevard, putting two stops within Oakhurst. Although the light rail isn't coming until the 2030s, Charlotte is a growing city, and the Oakhurst area is on the front lines of the outward expansion.Commuting to Center City
The Charlotte Area Transit System offers bus routes throughout the neighborhood, and proximity to Independence Boulevard makes commuting a breeze, though there can be some traffic along the way. Uptown is 5 miles away, and the trip ranges from 10 to 25 minutes. For trips to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport, 13 miles away, residents of Oakhurst have to pass through the city or take a long way around.Suburban strip malls with a few gems
Both Wendover and Monroe have a decent selection of local businesses and strip malls. Between a typical section of pharmacies, gyms and banks, as well as a remarkable amount of salons, there are a few favorite eateries. Night Swim Coffee has a welcoming atmosphere for chatting or working, and the SWIRL Dessert Bar is the go-to spot for all things sweet. The Common Market is an eclectic store, restaurant and bar all rolled into one. When it's time to pick up groceries, Food Lion, Walmart, and Aldi line the edges of Oakhurst, but they are not walkable for most residents.
