Reid Park
Suburban Neighborhood in Charlotte, North Carolina
Mecklenburg County 28208
Midcentury and modernist homes by a golf course and creeks
Most of Reid Park’s residential streets branch off West Boulevard and roll down to Irwin Creek. Other properties sit next to Carolina Golf Club. Sidewalks are fairly uncommon, but streets are lightly trafficked in the first place. Some lots are packed with mature trees, providing plenty of shade during summers. Here, homebuyers will find a mix of new and vintage homes, with undeveloped, forested lots in between. “Reid Park isn’t quite a historic neighborhood, but you’ll find a lot of all brick houses with real craftsmanship, and a lot have been completely renovated,” says Amy Smith, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker and lifelong resident of Charlotte who has 6 years of experience representing transactions in the area. Midcentury cottages, American Craftsman bungalows and ranch-style homes go for around $250,000 to $325,000. 21st century constructions include New Traditional builds and custom homes with modernist influences. Their prices usually range between $300,000 and $400,000.Spending time outdoors in Reid Park
Amay James Park sits in the southwest corner of the neighborhood, which is the site of community gardens, basketball courts and a playground. Also present at the park is a community center which routinely hosts events such as a Black History Month celebration. Residents can get a full day of outdoor fun at Clanton Park, which boasts several basketball courts, pickleball courts, a rentable indoor pavilion and the Arbor Glen Outreach Facility. Activities hosted at the facility include a summer camp for 8–13-year-old kids and line dancing lessons. Irwin Creek Greenway runs through the park, a shaded, paved trail which connects Clanton to neighboring Revolution Park, which features most sports fields such as a football field.Education in Reid Park
Prekindergarten through fifth grade students can attend Reid Park Academy, which is within a one-mile drive of most homes. Middle schools can attend Wilson STEM Academy, a partial magnet school with an emphasis on computer science, engineering and interdisciplinary learning. Students can wrap up at Harding University High, whose marching band marched in the Inaugural Parade of President Obama. Academic programs offered at Harding University High include the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID). All three of these schools receive C ratings from Niche.Corridors Connect
A stretch of Reid Park’s residential streets is closed to cars annually as part of Corridors Connect, a city-wide series of events that aims to promote connectivity between neighbors and physical wellness. In the past, this event has taken place around October by the Amay James Community Center. Past itineraries have included activities such as a musical petting zoo and arts and crafts.Between Uptown, the airport and highways
Reid Park is about 2 miles from both Interstate 77 and Billy Graham Parkway, also known as Charlotte Route 4, which encircles The Queen City. Residents can access Uptown via West Boulevard. While the commute is only 4 miles, residents can expect a lot of traffic. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is about 5 miles west, and traffic can be similarly heavy. Charlotte Area Transit System bus line 10 passes by the north side of the neighborhood.Local restaurants and a food co-op on its way
Aside from two Family Dollars, there’s not too much shopping in the immediate vicinity of Reid Park, but Smith points out that residents are very proactive in supporting each other in the absence of big supermarkets. Some residents grow their own fruits and vegetables in community gardens. Development of Three Sisters Farm and Market is also underway, a community-run food co-op expected to open its doors in early 2025. “There’s still a strong sense of community in that neighborhood,” Smith says. “After the pandemic, everything became isolated, but they’re still really involved there.” For supermarkets like Publix and Harris Teeter, residents will turn to nearby Lower South End, known as LoSo, but this growing commercial hub has much more to offer than just groceries. “LoSo has done a lot. They just completed a pickleball center, and they have a lot of breweries and restaurants. It’s very much a hangout spot for the under-35 generation,” Weinberg says. Chicken King is right on West Boulevard, a restaurant popular for their fish, burgers and all things chicken, from grilled chicken salad to gizzards. Alternatively, residents can take their tastebuds on a trip to Jamaica at Lawrence Caribbean Restaurant, which serves up roti, oxtail and other favorites.
