Charlotte’s up-and-coming district

Burgeoning York Road follows in the footsteps of Charlotte’s coveted South End and NoDa districts, mature communities that have preserved their heritage charm in creative ways. The mixed-use development town locally referred to as Lower South End, or ‘LoSo’, is situated on the cusp of Southside Park. Some locals wittingly compare the name of the developed neighborhood to “Soda Sopa,” a fictional town representing commercially developed entertainment districts in the South Park television series.

Entertainment and dining

LoSo’s healthy mixture of commercial, industrial and residential environments tells a story of transition and rapid development. Offices, shops and restaurants flock to the southern section of the neighborhood. LoSo has cultivated a rich environment of breweries and restaurants, making this locale a must for food lovers. Visit The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery and Biergarten, a mainstay of LoSo, and stretch out on their eight-acre oasis of age-old hickory trees and plentiful patio space while enjoying one of their traditionally crafted beers and German-inspired fare. Family-owned McKoy’s Smokehouse and Saloon should also a local favorite. The family-owned restaurant is a local staple serving family recipes created with regionally sourced meats and vegetables. Essential shopping needs can be satisfied a mile up the road on South Boulevard in the Sedgefield shopping center which lodges a Harris Teeter and links to other convenient retail destinations.

Condominiums and small houses

As a fast-growing business and entertainment district, York Road has limited options for housing. There are a few small residential houses, which mostly feature modest brick constructions. Busy Tryon Street runs straight through the neighborhood and funnels into residential clusters on either side. Condominium units are the most common form of housing and typically range in price from $500,000 to $700,000.

Access to Charlotte Public Schools

LoSo students are fortunate to attend school within the consistently well-performing Charlotte Mecklenburg County district. While there are no schools within the LoSo itself, there are several schools situated within a one-mile radius of the neighborhood borders. Nearby Sedgefield Elementary School earns a C-plus on Niche, while Sedgefield Middle School earns a B-minus. Harding University High School serves children of York Road and earns a C from Niche.

Public transportation

LoSo is cradled by Interstate 77 in the west, affording residents an easy commute into Charlotte’s Center City. Main thoroughfare, Tryon Street, will take locals straight into the business district. Mass transit options are aplenty in this growing region. Scaleybark station on South Boulevard provides light rail access, or alternatively, a CATS bus system runs through the main streets of the area.

Residents of York Road can find plenty of travel services to get around in the city.
