Why York Road has become a popular place to live

York Road is a lively neighborhood southwest of Uptown Charlotte that i more commonly known as LoSo, short for Lower South End. Following a similar trajectory as the more developed South End, it's a buzzing hotspot for dining and nightlife, with former warehouses and commercial buildings now housing craft breweries, an array of restaurants and social spots. Homebuyers and renters alike are drawn here for the walkable lifestyle and access to the LYNX Blue Line, which heads all the way to University City. The neighborhood’s school zoning, which includes the highly rated Myers Park High School, adds appeal for families.

Limited detached homes, with more condos and townhouses

As a fast-growing business and entertainment district, York Road has limited housing options. The small collection of detached single-family homes here sits mostly west of South Tryon Street. You’ll find smaller ranch-style homes, cottages and Cape Cods from the 1940s and 1950s mixing with larger custom new construction on wide streets shaded by mature trees. There are far more townhouses and condos to choose from, with units ranging from under 1,000 to over 2,700 square feet and typically featuring high-end finishes, balconies or rooftop terraces. There are also many apartment complexes in the neighborhood, but there are nearly as many homeowners as renters.

What buyers can expect to pay for homes in York Road

The neighborhood’s median sale price is nearly $600,000, significantly higher than Charlotte ’s, which hovers around $430,000. Here’s how prices break down by home type:

  • Detached homes range from the lower $400,000s to more than $1 million.
  • Townhouses start in the lower $400,000s and can reach the lower $900,000s.
  • Condos rarely go on the market, with no recent sales.
“I live in the Lower South End. It’s a great investment,” says Nick Cabaniss, a Realtor with Carolina Realty & Investing Group. “South End is very saturated and extremely busy, and things are already extremely expensive there, so people are migrating to the Lower South End. A lot of people say they want to live in South End, and then they realize they don’t have $2.5 million, so they go a mile away to LoSo, and you can get a really good bang for your buck.”

Breweries, barbecue and brunch spots close to home

Residents are steps from trendy breweries, bars with games and live music and a variety of restaurants. The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery and Biergarten is a mainstay where you can enjoy traditionally crafted beers and German-inspired fare in its large outdoor space. Bowling, shuffleboard and pinball are favorite activities at Queen Park Social, known for its American fare and specialty cocktails. The family-owned McKoy’s Smokehouse and Saloon is a staple for barbecue, and State of Confusion is a popular brunch spot with a menu featuring both New Orleans and Latin American cuisine. “Yama is one of the best sushi restaurants. We’ve got a country bar, which is Goldie’s. If you’re looking for a sports bar, you’ve got Platform,” Cabaniss says. As for shopping, local and national retailers, along with a few grocery stores, line South Boulevard, so everyday essentials are close to home.

Short commutes to Uptown, South End and SouthPark

Easy access to Interstate 77, South Boulevard and South Tryon Street makes it easier for commuters to reach destinations around Charlotte. Nearby job hubs include:

  • South End, which is around 2 miles away and is known for its startups and tech jobs
  • Uptown, which is about 5 miles away and is the city’s Central Business District
  • SouthPark, which is around 5 miles away and is home to a variety of employers
Commuters can hop on the LYNX Blue Line light rail at Scaleybark Station or catch a CATS bus along South Boulevard to avoid rush hour traffic. And if you want to bike into the Center City, you can use the Charlotte Rail Trail, which Cabaniss says is a beloved feature of the neighborhood: “There’s a big walking and running community in this general area. There are tons of run clubs.”
