Nature and history 4 miles from Chattanooga
Avondale, 10 minutes from downtown Chattanooga, is bordered by a national park and a thriving city. It’s largely residential, but everything from entertainment to eateries is only a few minutes away. Nearby is the National Military Park, Missionary Ridge, housing several preserved land parcels and monuments telling the story of the Union victory at the Battle of Chattanooga. “The reservations are there to preserve what land was able to be protected and to help commemorate the Battle of Missionary Ridge,” says Christopher Young, interpretive park ranger. Outside the park, Avondale properties have limited acreage, though most homes still have front and backyard spaces surrounded by thick trees, providing natural shading. It’s uncommon to see houses connect, as most are single-family or multi-units within a large construction. A popular home addition is simple chain-link fencing, gates or posted wooden slats bordering many front yards.
Missionary Ridge is a beautiful vantage spot for Avondale residents.
Avondale's main thoroughfare is Route 17.
