Established homes and busy commercial corridor shape Brainerd living

Vintage homes and tree-lined streets define the Brainerd neighborhood in Chattanooga, one of the oldest parts of the city. The community is named for the road that passes through its center, which is lined with fast-food restaurants, convenience stores and other small businesses. The thoroughfare also also serves as a convenient way to drive through town, and Interstate 24 at the neighborhood's southern end offers even more commuting options. With City Center to the west and the Hamilton Place shopping center to the east, Brainerd residents are in the middle of some of Chattanooga's most popular destinations.

Older homes with character define the area's housing

Brainerd's housing inventory includes a range of early-1900s styles surrounded by mature, leafy trees. "If you're looking for a house with character, that's where you're going to want to be," says Linda Palacio, a Realtor at Zach Taylor Chattanooga with over 20 years of experience. "It's a lot of old Chattanooga." The landscape includes hilly, winding streets on the neighborhood's west side and flat, gridded layouts on the east side. As you drive through the area, you'll see Cape Cods, bungalows, Tudor Revivals and Dutch Colonials. Most homes cost between the mid-$100,000s and mid-$600,000s. You might be able to find fixer-uppers below this range, and there are occasionally large homes that sell for more.

What the drive downtown is like from Brainerd

Interstate 24 offers a convenient thoroughfare to make the 7-mile trip downtown, which typically takes about 10 minutes, but which can be longer during rush hour. "The commute during work time is very heavy," Palacio says. "If I'm leaving and I know I'm going to the Brainerd area or the East Brainerd area, I prepare myself an extra 10 minutes because I know I'm going to hit traffic." You could also take Brainerd Road to Martin Luther King Boulevard for a 5-mile drive downtown, but this route usually takes longer.
