Concord Audobon
From ranch-style houses to modern Traditionals
The neighborhood leans against a backdrop of forested hills. Many ranch-style houses, contemporary Traditionals and farmhouses occupy spacious lots, some of which make room for patches of tall and mature trees. The neighborhood's northern end has more hilly landscapes with bi-levels and more ranch-style houses. The neighborhood also has a few garden-style apartment and condo complexes. In response to the natural surroundings, it’s not uncommon for residents to keep feeders and birdhouses. Depending on size and age, most single-family homes across this neighborhood cost between $250,000 and $500,000.The Audubon Acres ‘oasis’ and kayaking the South Chickamauga Creek
Visitors to the 130-acre Audubon Acres can explore dense woodlands on 5 miles of hiking trails or go tubing and kayaking on the South Chickamauga Creek during the summer. Other birds that call this sanctuary home include eastern bluebirds, barred owls and pileated woodpeckers. “We have quite a few birds who call it home. It’s just a nice place, a quiet oasis for this neighborhood,” Null says. A swinging bridge amid the woods allows walkers to cross the water and get some scenic overlooking views of the surrounding preserve. Other landmarks on this popular site include the Spring Frog Cabin, a log home believed to have been built by the Cherokees during the mid-1700s. The Concord Golf Club offers another recreational option with its public 18-hole course. The neighborhood is also a few blocks from the Camp Jordan baseball and soccer complex, which has a trail and a fishing pond. The Acropolis’ Greek comfort foods and the Forbidden City’s buffet
The Hamilton Mall area features many chain retailers and restaurants, as well as some local staples. Morning commuters can start their day with a simple fruit bowl and bagel at the Mean Mug Coffeehouse, a popular local chain. The Forbidden City has been rated as one of Chattanooga’s best buffets and features traditional Chinese decor. Statues of guardian lions near the glass entrance welcome hungry patrons. The nearby Acropolis Grill serves hearty Greek cuisine. Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods offer trendy grocery store options. The Hamilton Mall area “has a bunch of shopping. It has chain stores, restaurants, lots of things that people usually like to be close to,” says Callie Arbuckle, assistant manager of the Breakout Games escape room. “We’re starting to get some of the franchises that are not really local to the south. It’s pretty cool.”Fun and engaging activities at strongly rated Hamilton County schools
Students here may start at East Brainerd Elementary School, which gets a B from ratings site Niche. They may then go to East Hamilton middle and high schools, which respectively get A-minus and B-plus grades from Niche. The ratings site ranks East Hamilton Middle among Tennessee's 50 best public middle schools. East Hamilton High keeps its students engaged throughout the year with activities like a Cookie Swap during the holidays.Dressing up for the Fairy & Folk Festival
The neighborhood can look to the Audubon Society for annual festivities. The organization’s events include the Chattanooga Fairy & Folk Festival, which occurs over a few days in May. Those attending dress in fairy tale garb as they browse food trucks and enjoy entertainment like music and storytelling. The event’s activities include contests where participants, using nothing more than sticks and twigs, have built items like a miniature fairy salon and spa model. The Little Owl 5K race occurs around the same time as the festival, and most of the contest takes place on a dirt trail.Close to Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport and quick interstate access
No Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority — CARTA — buses run in the neighborhood, but a route goes to the Hamilton Place mall a few miles north. Otherwise, many here drive to commute across the city and region. The neighborhood sits right along Interstate 75, which connects to Interstate 24 and takes drivers to downtown Chattanooga about 11 miles west. The interstate network also provides connections to Nashville, Knoxville and Atlanta. However, the proximity to the interstate and its traffic can subject part of the neighborhood to high noise levels. The Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport, about 4 miles west, is the city’s hub for commercial flights. The Erlanger East Hospital provides the closest major medical facility.Important to know
Concord Audobon has an overall CAP Index crime score of 5 out of 10, putting it slightly above the national average. Still, some tout the neighborhood as safe. “From my experience, there’s always kind of just an overwhelming sense of security, especially in the residential areas. When you get to some other places in town, it can be a little sketchy. But over in the Concord area, it’s pretty nice,” Arbuckle says.
