"Community Jewel” minutes from downtown
Once the site of a Civil War battle, Chattanooga’s Glenwood community has since transformed into one of the city’s and country’s first planned neighborhoods to feature curvilinear streets. Today, the large CHI Memorial Hospital campus anchors the neighborhood, with established homes filling the space around it. Glenwood’s narrow, sunbaked streets and sidewalks are well-maintained. The community’s homes sit four miles east of Downtown Chattanooga and 10 miles west of the popular Hamilton Place Mall. “There’s lots of potential for investors,” says Affiliate Broker David Hanson of eXp Realty. “They’re building three-bedroom homes and flipping existing units.” Glenwood’s older streets and homes might not look like much, but the community’s members stay involved and active. The Glenwood Neighborhood Association puts on public events for both entertainment and awareness. The live music of the Glenwood Jazz Festival and the National Night Out’s police meet and greet efforts keep the moniker “A Community Jewel” ringing true. “In my opinion, it’s a really up-and-coming area,” says Realtor Carter Roberson of Re/Max Renaissance Realtors. “Ten or 15 years ago, most of that area was owned by landlords.” With the advent of new construction and community involvement, the Community Jewel is poised to be more than a diamond in the rough.
Glenwood is just a few minutes from the parks and amenities of the Tennessee River.

Move-in ready ranch homes along Glenwood Drive
While strolling down the sidewalk, buyers will find bungalows and ranch-style homes with a degree of variation. Homes appear in these expected styles at first glance but also reveal architectural influences from the Tudor Revival style. “Most homes were built in the 1960s or earlier,” says Hanson. “The area will grow as more homes are built.” A three-bedroom bungalow needing renovations might sell for $100,000, while a recently renovated home with a Tudor-inspired exterior might fetch $350,000. Cars often line the narrow streets due to a lack of attached garages, making parking a tight squeeze. “In 10 or 15 years, it’ll be worth more overall as they continue to work on it,” says Roberson. The area isn't boisterous despite being so close to the CHI Memorial medical facilities. No significant highways are nearby to fill the streets with the sound of honking horns or rumbling engines.

Saucy selections down Dodson Avenue
Casual bites and soul food are Glenwood’s staples. Wright’s BBQ serves a full menu of smoky barbecue meals and sandwiches when shoppers need to refuel after a day on the town. Fresh pastries and hot coffee are available at The Livingstone. Locals also visit the IGA when it’s time to stock up their pantries and cupboards with fresh produce or other essentials. Downtown Chattanooga has more options for comfort food, like Bluegrass Grill and the Outpost Bar and Restaurant. Others drive down Interstate 75 to hang out at Hamilton Place Mall to catch a movie or shop.

Families head to Carver Park for an exciting day outdoors. Kids can hang out on the playground equipment while others play a round of disc golf on the nearby course. Hot summer days are best spent at the Carver Community Center. Folks can cool down in the outdoor pool or head inside to shoot hoops on the court. Those living closer to Avondale Park gather for a game of doubles on the tennis court or take to the diamond for some baseball. Seniors can play billiards or practice their needlepoint during the advanced sewing class at the Glenwood Community Center. Those who don’t want to drive Downtown to visit the aquarium make memories at The Chattanooga Zoo at Warner Park, known for its role as an intake facility. Rescued animals are brought in for a short period, transferred to a rehabilitator, and then released back into their natural habitats.
