A rural nature-surrounded community at the edge of Lookout Mountain and downtown Chattanooga
In the foothills near Lookout Mountain, residents of High Point enjoy quiet lives in the countryside. This rural Walker County neighborhood is 14 miles south of downtown Chattanooga, away from most commercial centers but still a simple drive into the city. “It's very scenic and private,” says Jennifer Nelis, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Commercial Kinard Realty. “You get views of Lookout Mountain, and you're pretty equidistant from downtown Chattanooga and Cloudland Canyon, which is another big nature draw.” With that comes larger lots and homes and a more connected, hometown feel. “It's definitely a cute, little tight-knit community,” says Noah Daniel, a resident and server at Cross Roads Restaurant.
Homes along the hillside
High Point’s rural composition guarantees expansive acreage, and its elevation provides the pleasant backdrop of Lookout Mountain. State Route 193 runs through the middle of the community, while homes cluster in small but spread-out subdivisions on either side of the road. Properties sit on winding country roads, and many homes have perks such as in-ground pools and covered garages. “It's got nice scenery and privacy for people who don’t want to have neighbors right up on them,” says Nelis, adding that a recent client's experience exemplifies the rural lifestyle. “The next-door neighbor is a pot-belly pig,'' she says. "You never see the people because they have like 6 acres, but that pig likes to come hang out.”
Typical of Georgia's architectural styles, there are many mixed-material ranch-style homes, brick colonial revivals and New Traditional homes. Though a few houses predate the 1960s, the majority of the housing is from the 1980s to the present, and new construction is ongoing. The most recent addition is Cloudland Station, a 450-acre development of Craftsman and Folk Victorian cottages. The gated community has a salt-water swimming pool, a treehouse hang-out for kids, a library and a coffeehouse. The idea behind the development was to stylize it as a picturesque and perfectly preserved Southern village. Daniel mentions plans for an expansion just south of Cloudland Station. “It’s like 300 acres of land,” says Daniels. “They're going to break it up into 5-acre plots and build more houses.” Prices in the neighborhood range from $200,000 to $430,000.
Scenic hikes at Cloudland Canyon State Park
High Point's rural composition lends itself to outdoor recreation, whether walking to the nearest pond for a waterside picnic, fishing at McCallie Lake, or taking in the scenery at one of the many hiking destinations. A deep gorge defines Cloudland Canyon State Park, forming its iconic canyons and creating a setting for miles of trails through 3,600 acres of woodland that lead to waterfalls, caves and cliff outlooks. The park is dotted with plenty of different options for adventure, namely fishing ponds, a disc golf course and horseback riding. Nearby, mountain bikers can trek along 25 miles of interconnected trails at Five Points Recreation Area. With varying degrees of difficulty, the trails curl over rolling descents and steep climbs through mountain gorges around Lula Lake.
American food on the rural roadside
High Point has a few necessities for running errands, but there are more options at the central commercial hub of Chattanooga Valley, just north of the neighborhood. There’s a Food City off Mission Ridge Road, as well as a few dining spots sprinkled throughout. With a rustic, woodsy feel, Snack Shack offers a classic American breakfast and lunch from a log cabin. A little closer to home, locals can grab burgers and sides on the wooden porch of Cross Roads Restaurant, a little free-standing restaurant just off the roadside. This family-owned business has been a staple in the community for 18 years. Daniel, son of owner Cyndi Daniel, describes the tight-knit, neighborly feel of the spot as well as his mom’s presence in the community. “Everybody around here knows her, and she knows everybody,” says Daniel. “Since we're at a four-way intersection, it’s kind of like a little meeting area for people to come through on vacation, but for the most part, it's just our local people and the local work crews around here.”

Ridgeland has a college prep academy and a vast list of extracurriculars, including VEX Robotics and several career and technical job student organizations. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is about 14 miles north.
Pick-n-Sip at High Point Farms
High Point Farms hosts many events surrounded by bright, blooming gardens, like "Pick-n-Sip," where visitors can grab a glass of wine and put together a bouquet or take a bouquet-designing class. They also offer tours of the 75-acre grounds, featuring barns, a treehouse, a greenhouse, goats, and, of course, the gardens.
Drives along State Route 193
State Route 193 bisects the neighborhood, providing a direct connection to downtown Chattanooga 14 miles north. Most use a car to get around, as there are no bus services in High Point. The Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport is about 20 miles north.
