A growing suburban enclave minutes from historically significant nature
Named for the boot-like shape of the landscape carved by the Tennessee River, Moccasin Bend is a blooming suburban enclave just a bike ride away from the scenic woodlands of the Moccasin Bend National Archeological District. Surrounded on either side by the Tennessee River, the National Park Service in its informational literature refers to the peninsula as one of the "most unique units found in the entire Service." Though nature is the name of the game here, locals have access to a lively shopping and dining scene just across Interstate 27.

Vintage bungalows and New traditional homes pepper the hillside
The residential area is in the northern portion of Moccasin Bend, with homes nestled in thick swaths of trees along the hilly terrain. “It's probably the best view location in the entire city, in my humble opinion,” says Doug Lawrence, a broker with Lawrence Team Homes of the Woodland Height subdivision. Most homes date back to the mid-20th century, with ranch-style homes, Craftsman bungalows and Colonial Revivals the most common. Newer contemporary and modern homes with sleek angles and mixed classical characteristics are mixed into the neighborhood, while townhouses and condos have begun to crop up within the last decade. More subdivisions are being developed to expand residential offerings, so housing will continue growing. Two-bedroom homes range from $200,000 to $400,000, while houses with four bedrooms or more tend to sell for $500,000 to $750,000.

The Moccasin Bend Archeological District
The southern portion of Moccasin Bend is known as the Moccasin Bend Archeological District, and it's significant for cultural knowledge. The area contains remnants of 12,000 years of permanent human habitation. While Civil War artifacts and items connected to Native American tribes have also been unearthed, some finds date back to earliest uses of stone tools. Sections of the district have been opened to the public within the nearly 1,000-acre expanse along marked trails. Moccasin Bend is also close to one of Chattanooga's busiest natural areas, a 92-acre site known as Stringer's Ridge. Sitting on the crest of Red Bank, this park provides impressive city views from the overlook and along 7 miles of hiking and biking trails. Golfers can book a tee time at the Moccasin Bend Golf Course, an 18-hole championship course with views of the mountain range and the Tennessee River.
