‘River side’ neighborhood with direct access to downtown
The Chattanooga neighborhood of Riverside sits right between a railyard to the east and a large number of warehouse buildings to both the north and west. Just a few of the employers here are a flour mill, a plant operated by the Pepsi Bottling Group and smaller scale operations like a garage and wrecker service. Despite the significant industrial presence here, there are a few advantages to living on this side of the city. The Amnicola Highway runs right along Riverside’s western end and provides a direct route to downtown Chattanooga, which is a 4-mile drive south from the neighborhood. “The uniqueness of it is it’s kind of like a central area. You’re close to many things,” says Monique Bell, a community development specialist with the nearby East Chattanooga Community Center. “There are also a few restaurants, some little businesses and a grocery store. So, you really don’t have to go out of the community to access your needs.” The neighborhood is also starting to see changes in certain pockets, particularly with new residents who have found starter home opportunities. The homes here largely comprise of minimalist and many decades old single-story houses, but some have come in to either kick off restoration projects or build anew. Bell herself says she has a friend who’s built some new houses in the area, all of which sold rather quickly.
Small single-story homes and investment opportunities
Whether they’re packed onto small lots along narrow, sidewalk free roads or on larger spaces with gravel front yards large enough to hold several cars, much of the homes here occupy minimalist properties. The houses can share blocks with their industrial neighbors, with some of the houses shielded by curtains of mature trees. The common styles here are Craftsman, bungalow, minimal Traditional and ranch-style. Price points can go from $130,000 to around $250,000, with factors like size and condition playing some role. There are also some homes and vacant lots that are being billed as investment or affordable housing opportunities, and the price points are going for no higher than about $50,000.
Barbecue at Choo Choo and soul food at Lois’s
While there a few chain options around Riverside, there are several community staples. Those looking for anything ranging from bread sticks and slices to sauce-smothered spaghetti and even chicken wings can stop by Ricko’s Pizzeria & Italian Cuisine on Amnicola. Farther south, just off Amnicola and on Appling Street, is Choo Choo BBQ, which operates out of small bungalow style shack located on a gravel lot. In neighboring Curtis Street. Soul food can be picked up at Lois’s Restaurant. Grocery shopping can be done at IGA, which aims to help address the food desert challenge in East Chattanooga.
Quickly hop on the Tennessee Riverwalk
Those looking to go on peaceful walks or bike trips don’t need to look far as the 16-mile Tennessee Riverwalk passes through the industrial area on Riverside’s west end. Greenway users can choose to either travel south to downtown or north the Tennessee Riverpark area overlooked by the Dupont Parkway. Visitors here can get on the Tennessee River from the River Boat Boat Ramp, burn off energy on the playground sets or simply admire several artistic installations. Those looking for some indoor activities can return to Riverside itself and stop by High Point Climbing and Fitness.
