Scenic Walden offers a tight-knit mountain-top community
The town of Walden is located atop one of the highest and most scenic points of Walden Ridge—often described as part of Signal Mountain—about 10 miles from downtown Chattanooga. “Walden is beautiful, scenic and very close-knit. Some residents have lived here for decades. Neighhbors are friends and newcomers are instantly welcomed,” says Cassie Hollis, a Realtor with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate, who has lived in and sold homes in Walden for more than 25 years.
In addition to Walden’s friendly vibe, its other major asset is its setting, “It’s peaceful and scenic,” says Hollis. “Neighbors would rather gather at each other’s homes at the end of the day for a cookout than go out to dinner down the mountain.” When they do go into town, they head to the half-mile stretch of Taft Highway between Ault Road to the southwest and Albert Road to the northeast, which is considered Downtown Walden.

Early-to-mid-20th century ranch-style, cottages and Craftsman-style homes range from $350,000 to $800,000. According to Hollis, buyers are attracted by the architectural diversity of homes, even though they may have to wait for the right one to become available. “Walden is a bit more rural than the rest of Signal Mountain, but that’s exactly what our buyers want. This is where they want to be.”

It’s an 8-mile trip south to Chattanooga and 21 miles north, over Walden Ridge, to the historic town of Dunlap. While it’s a 20-mile drive to Chattanooga Metro Airport via Route 153, drivers are wise to give themselves at least an hour to allow for traffic around the mountain and near Chattanooga.
