Lakefront living in Chelan below the Cascade Mountains
Centered around one of the deepest glacial lakes in the country, Chelan offers a relaxed waterfront lifestyle surrounded by golf courses, boat docks and the mountain scenery of northern Washington. After exploring blue waters and high-country vineyards, residents can dine at unique restaurants and explore eclectic gift shops in Downtown Chelan. With picturesque houses overlooking the lake, this community provides a nature-oriented environment with abundant activities in the Cascade Mountains. "People bring their families to the lake in the summer, and they decide to buy a home here," says Tobi Linck, a former resident and broker at RE/MAX The Collective. "There is a strong sense of community, and the pace is slower. People take the time to enjoy their food, the lake and the view."
21st-century homes on the north shore
Closer to downtown, houses have a traditional suburban feel, with flat lawns, gardens and a walkable layout. One of the highest-value areas is Lake Chelan Hills, which has a homeowner's association and 21st-century homes overlooking the lake's north shore. The most common architectural styles are New Traditional and Craftsman-style homes. The median home sale price is about $668,000. Listings begin at $210,000 and reach $5.1 million for waterfront mansions nearing 4,500 square feet. Condos are also available, costing between $260,000 and $680,000. "It is a very active resort community," Linck says. "When I lived in Chelan, most of my clients were looking for second homes, and there are timeshare condos that people use as short-term rentals during the tourist season."
Due to the area's dry climate, Chelan County is prone to wildfires, which have damaged residential structures and land. As a result, the county has disaster preparedness and risk assessment strategies in place. Fires are a primary contributor to air pollution, which is monitored closely by the state and local health districts. The county is also an active tectonic region, with relatively frequent earthquakes, none of which have recorded a magnitude over 4 since the early 1900s.
Scenic boating areas and golf courses
Don Morse Memorial Park is a 40-acre waterfront park with a beach area and docks for boating below the mountains. "People go to Chelan because the lake is very clean," Linck says. "It's excellent for fishing, boating and swimming." There is also an 18-hole putting green, beach volleyball courts and a go-kart track. The Chelan Riverwalk Park has a paved one-mile loop trail by the water with a boat launch and picnic areas. Residents can head out to the Chelan Wildlife Area, which has 250 miles of trails for mountain biking and hiking in the mountains. There are also golf courses, like Lake Chelan Municipal Golf Course, with mountain scenery above the fairways. Another course is Bear Mountain Ranch, which has an elevated layout and aerial views of the lake.
Vintage brownstone restaurants and a farmers market
Downtown Chelan is a vintage city center with brownstone boutiques and old-fashioned storefronts. It features gift shops, outdoor apparel stores and various restaurants, like Local Myth Pizza, which serves gluten-free pies in a trendy space with craft beer. The Landing is a hotel eatery with patio seating and an ice cream parlor. While visiting the shops and restaurants downtown, residents can pick up groceries at Safeway or Chelan Market Fresh. The Lake Chelan Wine Valley is known for its vineyards, with over 40 wineries and various tasting experiences. "There are several vineyards in the area, and there's a lot of outdoor dining," Linck says. "The views are wonderful, and the weather is great." The Chelan Farmers Market hosts craft vendors and local farm stands with fresh produce twice weekly from May to October.
Extracurriculars and culture at local schools
Morgan Owings Elementary School earns a C-plus grade from Niche, with an English language learner's curriculum. Chelan Middle School has a B-minus and offers extracurricular activities like chess and drama clubs. Chelan High School receives an A-minus. It also has advanced placement courses and received a 2024 award for its positive school culture.
Reaching Wenatchee and the Spokane airport
The Link Transit is a public bus system in Chelan and Douglas Counties. The nearest emergency room is Lake Chelan Health, approximately a mile east of downtown. State Route 150 is the area's thoroughfare, connecting downtown to U.S. Route 97. Wenatchee is about 40 miles south on US-97, and Spokane is within a three-hour drive. The Spokane International Airport offers passenger flights, roughly 160 miles east.
