South Row
Suburban Neighborhood in Chelmsford, Massachusetts
Middlesex County 01824
Peaceful single-family by brooks and rivers
An almost entirely residential neighborhood in Chelmsford, South Row features eclectic New England homes in a green, leafy setting. Properties here include Cape Cods, ranch styles, bi-levels, Colonial Revivals and raised ranches. Many homes list between $500,000 and $1 million. While most houses were built in the latter half of the 20th century, there is a handful of newer homes from the 2000s fetching around $1.2 million. Though there are few sidewalks, residents can still be spotted walking along the quiet streets, which are shaded by the myriad trees in the neighborhood. Yards are usually well-kept and spacious, varying from quarter-acre to over 2 acres in size. “The entire town of Chelmsford is in demand, and some properties rack up more than 10 offers,” says Chinatti Realty Team Leader Lisa Chinatti, who has sold homes in the county for a decade. “Chelmsford is still an insanely hot market.”Chelmsford Public Schools rates an A
South Row Elementary sits at the center of the community, making it a quick trip for most families to get to and from the school. The elementary school currently serves children from kindergarten through fourth grade and is the smallest elementary school in town. Students then head to Parker Middle School for grades five and six, and continue to McCarthy Middle School through their seventh and eighth grade years. All three schools have an A-minus Niche rating. Chelmsford High School earns an A and offers AP and dual-enrollment classes. Providing students with travel abroad opportunities, Chelmsford High also has a rigorous dual language department with an emphasis on cultural enrichment.Recreational options around town
Locals are often drawn to the sparkling waters of Russell Mill Pond, surrounded by town-owned woodlands, Murphy Field and the red mill. Mountain bikers can explore any of the forest’s seven trails, and hikers plod along the waterfront with their pets. George B. B. Wright Reservation and Warren-Pohl Conservation Reservation have more hiking areas, and the public nine-hole course at Chelmsford Country Club gives golfers opportunities to book tee times. Little ones will likely prefer Friendship Park and Roberts Field, which are about 5 miles away and include a big playground with a zipline and sports fields. Sitting approximately 3 miles south of the area, the Great Brook Farm State Park has over 1,000 acres of forestland, more than 20 miles of trails and a dairy farm that gives tours on weekends. Flying Change Stable has a horse-riding program, and the soccer club JR Goal Keeping is also near the community.Shopping and dining in Chelmsford Center
Rufina's is a neighborhood restaurant featuring nightly specials and authentic Italian fare. Adjacent to the community, Chelmsford Center, which is the downtown area, offers more eateries and retail options. Staple spots include 110 Grill Chelmsford, which has American classics and a full bar, and Fishbones, a seafood restaurant that doubles as a fish market. Local Realtor Michelle Souza at Chinatti Realty says, “Make sure you show up a half-hour or hour before you’re hungry,” as Fishbones is very popular and does not take reservations. Chelmsford’s small-town atmosphere is also reflected in local establishments such as KJ’s Caffé, a cozy coffee place with sandwiches and breakfast options. “You always know somebody who’s walking in the door,” Chinatti says. People can get groceries at Summer Street Grocers or at the farmers markets, which are called Chelmsford Market on the Common and Maxwell’s Winter Farmers Market. Across from Interstate 496, Chelmsford Mall is home to department stores and retailers like Michaels, and Market Basket is across the street.Celebrations and traditions in Chelmsford
Chelmsford has many community events, including a fall festival. The Holiday Gift Stroll of Center Village has carol singing and live performances, and people can browse through pop-up shops by local vendors and get free gift-wrapping. The Independence Day Parade & Country Fair is another annual tradition of the town, featuring a 2-mile road race and fun family-friendly activities. The Chelmsford Community of the Arts serves as a cultural hub for the Greater Lowell area, organizing events such as the Chelmsford Film Festival, open mic nights and the 10-minute Play Festival.Navigating into the capital city
Although South Row can be car-dependent, the community is relatively close to Interstate 495 and U.S. Route 3, providing people with access to highways. The capital city and the Boston Logan International Airport are about 30 to 35 miles away via U.S. Route 3 and Interstate 93. The Lowell Regional Transit Authority provides bus services throughout the Greater Lowell area, and there is an MBTA commuter train station in the neighboring city of Lowell for those heading to Boston. Atrius Health Chelmsford, the town’s medical center, is about 3 miles away, and Lowell General Hospital is 6 miles north of the neighborhood.
