A rural town with year-round recreation
Situated along the Chautauqua Ridge, Cherry Creek is a rural town in Western New York whose roots date back to the 19th century when a small stream flowing through the town and past bushels of cherry trees inspired its name. Swaths of farmland and rugged wooden hills make up its landscape, while country roads are dotted with Amish-owned farms and businesses. Today, this quiet community is known for its small-town living and year-round recreation, attracting residents and visitors from around the region. Cockaigne Ski Resort, known for its intense snowfall due to the lake effect snow off Lake Erie, is a significant establishment that draws visitors into this small town. "Outdoor recreation and rural living are by far the greatest draws to Western New York," says Heather Chase, a local real estate salesperson with ERA Real Estate who has nearly 10 years of experience in the industry. "You have Chautauqua Lake, Lake Erie, the woods and the mountains." Other initiatives that aim to increase tourism include the Amish Trail, which highlights dozens of Amish-owned establishments, and a destination equestrian trail system.

Ski slopes, horseback riding and snowmobiling
Horseback riding and snowmobile trails are hidden amongst surrounding woodlands and farmland. "We have trails that lead straight to Canada," Chase says. The Chautauqua County Equestrian Trail System (CCETS) aims to create a destination trail system by linking existing and underdeveloped private trails throughout the county to develop over 30 miles of horse trails. In the summer, Cherry Creek Campground attracts visitors looking to explore the New York Amish Trail, the CCETS or one of the many trails that weave through the nearby Boutwell Hill State Forest. "We have great hunting, camping, hiking trails and views," says Jerod Zahn, a real estate salesperson with ERA Real Estate who has lived in the region for over 50 years. Alleghany State Park is also 30 miles away. Seven miles from the heart of town, Linda's Falls is a protected area with a small waterfall and swimming hole. Anglers, kayakers and canoeists can also explore a 9-mile section of the Conewango Creek called "The Dredge." Twelve miles east, New Albion Lake is a small lake for kayakers, while about 15 miles away, Chautauqua Lake's 13,000 acres of blue water and waterfront parks attract boating enthusiasts and beachgoers. In the winter, Cherry Creek residents still embrace the great outdoors with ice-fishing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. The local Cockaigne Ski Resort closed its slopes for the 2023 to 2024 ski season due to a lack of snowfall and is currently listed for sale. Its future remains unclear, but other nearby destinations include the Holiday Valley Resort, about 30 miles east, and Peek'n Peak Resort, about 50 miles west.

Most commercial activity is centered around the hamlet, the site of the town's earliest settlement in 1815. The hamlet's tiny Main Street is home to a handful of local establishments, including the local firehouse, library, post office, houses of worship and an animal feed store. A small wooden cabin houses Rustic Creations, a home decor store that sells vintage treasures and farmhouse furnishings. Surrounding country roads lead to Amish-owned farms and businesses such as Malinda's Candy Shop and Valley View Cheese Co. Inc. South Dayton Supermarket is the nearest grocery, store 6 miles away. Larger chain grocers and big-box retailers are about 20 miles north in Dunkirk Township or 25 miles west in Jamestown.Main Street features four locally-owned restaurants. The Trillium Lodge stands out with its log cabin exterior. Patrons are greeted with a cozy ski chalet atmosphere with wooden accents, skis and wreaths. Crowd favorites include the slow-roasted prime rib smothered in mozzarella cheese, the fish fry and the steak. Heart & Soul Café is known for its hometown atmosphere and American classics. Big Eddie’s Pizza and Subs is a no-frills eatery known around town for its thick-crust pizza, super steak sub and wings.
At Trillium Lodge locals can enjoy a delicious meal and a refreshing beer.
Residents can visit South Dayton Supermarket near Cherry Creek to do their daily shopping locally.

Education in Pine Valley Central School District
The Pine Valley Central School District serves the Cherry Creek community and scores a C-minus rating from Niche. Pre-kindergarteners through sixth graders may attend Pine Valley Elementary School, which scores a C-minus on Niche. Pine Valley Elementary is also home to a district run daycare, which partners with Little Love Bugs Daycare Center. The C-rated Pine Valley Central Junior/Senior High School serves seventh through twelfth graders, and students may benefit from individualized attention due to a small student-to-teacher ratio of 8-to-1.

Small town events in Cherry Creek
In the heart of town, Cherry Creek Park offers an open green space with baseball diamonds, a playground, a basketball court and a covered pavilion. The park also hosts the town's annual summer music series on Sundays and the Fall Festival every September, when craft and food vendors set up in the open fields, live music blasts in the background, and family-friendly activities like hayrides entertain attendees of all ages.Four miles away, Farrington Hollow Farm is a family farm-turned-luxury event venue hidden in the woods. The venue also hosts local community events, such as the Cherry Creek Fire Department's Annual Turkey Party, where residents auction off turkey, ham and themed gift baskets. All proceeds help fund the fire department.
Country road commutes
The Chautauqua Area Regional Transit System provides public transportation throughout the county. Cherry Creek is home to one bus stop at Big Eddie's Pizza & Subs. It's common to see an Amish horse-drawn buggy, but otherwise, the community is primarily car-dependent. New York State Route 83 runs north-to-south through the heart of town. Dunkirk's Brooks Memorial Hospital is about 20 miles north, and Jamestown's UPMC Chautauqua is about 20 miles southwest. Niagara Falls International Airport is about 70 miles north via Interstate 90, while U.S. Route 62 is nearby.
