Neighborhood built after the Union Pacific Railroad
South Cheyenne has a story that is similar to the city's origin. The Union Pacific Railroad is a significant aspect of Cheyenne’s development as it was one of the towns built on the path of the first transcontinental railroad. This neighborhood is located south of these train tracks and originally housed many “blue collar” workers from the railroads and multicultural residents. Present-day, the demographics have changed, but its affordability and community feel remain the same. “The homes were built in the late 1800s to about 1930s and were smaller and affordable, so it covered a broad span,” says Steve Prescott, broker/owner at RE/MAX Capitol Properties. “There’s more diversity in employment. It’s not as much railroad as it used to be.” The Interstate 180 corridor also runs through the neighborhood, providing convenient access to retail and downtown.
South Cheyenne provides modern-day conveniences while maintaining its railroad roots.
Prices in South Cheyenne range from $160,000 for a fixer-upper to $370,000 for a larger home.

Budget-friendly cottages and bungalows
Most of the South Cheyenne neighborhood is part of the South Cheyenne historic district, which became official in the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. Because the neighborhood was originally for the working class, many homes are smaller than 1,500 square feet but still maintained its original condition. “Houses are typically smaller ranches, and some are classified as bungalows,” Prescott says. “This area draws a lot of first-time buyers and those searching for affordability. People do invest around here, too.” Some sidewalks align directly with the road, while others have a patch of grass separating pedestrians from the road. Properties often include a detached garage or a driveway. Street parking is possible for some residents, but parking permits are unnecessary. Prices range from $160,000 for a fixer-upper to $370,000 for a 3-plex. Since the area is next to the trains, it can draw occasional loud noises from carts coming together, and its proximity to Frontier Refinery can cause strong smells.
Homes are generally bungalows or smaller ranches in South Cheyenne.

Several churches that date back to the neighborhood’s origin are scattered in various places. “There are some small old churches in the area that maybe have congregation sizes of 50 to 100 people, but it’s kind of cool,” Prescott says.
