Rooted in the founding of an industrial district on the outskirts of town, life in Clearing is distinct among southwest Chicago neighborhoods thanks to what’s above it. A quick look at the sky above is often punctuated by passenger planes darting in and out of Chicago Midway International Airport, the residential community’s northeastern neighbor. Between the air traffic and the mostly freight-focused railyards to the south, residents can find international cuisine and independent grocery stores nestled along 63rd Street and several southwest Chicago parks within the neighborhood. “It’s a well-known, established and diverse community. You get the best of going downtown and also the south suburbs,” says Tish Herrera, a real estate agent with Baird & Warner. Herrera has sold homes in the Windy City for more than 20 years.
Traditional homes on compact streets
Chicago-style raised ranch homes are the most common style for single-family homes in Clearing. These homes share the basements and one-floor stylings of the nationally popular ranch style of the mid-20th century, but adapted to the city lifestyle by using narrow floorplans and architectural influences from the popular Prairie style like low-pitched roofs and brick exteriors. A few other styles are also present nearby, including traditional homes with influences from American Foursquare and Cape Cod architecture. Prices generally start at $180,000 and go up to $500,000.
Multi-family properties in the area include condos, Georgian-style townhomes and a few two- and three-flat converted homes. Prices for these typically range from $100,000 to $300,000 for individual units, and whole buildings usually sell for $325,000 to $600,000.
Due to Clearing’s location near Chicago Midway International Airport, locals on the east end of the neighborhood may encounter high noise levels from air traffic. Many homes in the neighborhood received upgrades to doors, windows and other equipment through the Residential Sound Insulation Program, an initiative funded by the airport to reduce the impact on neighbors’ daily life.

High-performing Chicago public schools
Local kids start their educational journeys at Hale Elementary School. The school has a B-minus grade on Niche. Students in the area are zoned for John F. Kennedy High School, which earns a C-plus grade on Niche. The A-minus-ranked Hancock College Preparatory High School is also local to Clearing and admits students by application; the school offers two signature Career and Technical Education programs in pre-engineering and pre-law.
St. Symphorosa Catholic School is a private option that also serves elementary and middle-level students. The school opened its STEM Studio in 2022, which provides a space for students to get hands-on with new technologies and craft their own engineering projects. The school earns an A-plus grade on Niche and has ties to the namesake St. Symphorosa Catholic Church, one of two churches within the Two Holy Martyrs Parish.

Southwest Chicago’s connection to Chicago Midway International Airport gives locals in Clearing and the surrounding area a distinct edge for regional and international travel. For local trips, West 63rd Street and 65th Street are key east-west thoroughfares, while Cicero Avenue and Harlem Avenue are the main north-south roads, both leading north to Interstate 55. Residents are about 12 miles southwest of the Chicago Loop.
Thanks to the area's wide sidewalks and grid layout, residents can easily get around Clearing on foot or by bike. Connections to the CTA bus system are available along major thoroughfares like 63rd Street, Austin Avenue, Narragansett Avenue and 65th Avenue. For medical emergencies, Holy Cross Hospital is 5 miles east of the neighborhood near Marquette Park.
Shops and restaurants on 63rd Street
Most of Clearing’s premier stops for dining are situated along 63rd Street. Warm wallpaper, archways and the smell of fresh pies set the tone at Vince’s Restaurant & Pizzeria. Locals on both sides of the tavern-style vs. deep dish debate can find common ground on the comprehensive menu, which also offers stuffed pizzas, calzones and panzerotti. Pupuseria's menu of Salvadoran flatbreads and Latin American flavors is accompanied by a minimal atmosphere with steel wall panels. A chalkboard with colorful rotating specials stands at the front of Cafe 63’s dining room. This brunch diner's specialties include pancake and waffle platters, sandwiches and varied skillets. For dessert, there’s Xurro, where house-made churros are the star of the show. Other offerings include churro ice cream sundaes, horchata lattes and funnel cakes.
Locals can get grocery trips done at the Fair Share Supermarket on 63rd Street, or visit Valle’s Produce & Carniceria, a smaller market with fresh meats and house-made salsa and menudo. Pre-owned clothing and home goods are on the shelves at The Salvation Army Family Store & Donation Center. Nationally known stops for everyday needs include Walgreens and Family Dollar.
Cafe 63 is breakfast and brunch diner featuring homemade soups, skillets, and more.

Outdoor recreation in Clearing
Clearing’s hub for outdoor time is Hale Park, situated near the center of the neighborhood on 62nd Street. Young ones in the community can visit the park for after-school programs or summer camps. The park’s fieldhouse is home to The Hale Theatre Company, a local collective with a 30-year history of community theater. Previous productions have included recognizable shows like Glengarry Glen Ross, The Matchmaker and Company.
Nestled within the Georgian houses and ranch-style homes on 64th Street, Lawler Park has been a fixture for recreation in Clearing since the late 1940s. The park’s marquee feature is the football/soccer field, which got a facelift with artificial turf in 2021. Residents can also stop by for pickup games on the basketball court or let the kids get some outside time with the playground and splash pad.
On the neighborhood’s north side near Garfield Ridge, Minuteman Park offers three fields for baseball and softball alongside a sand volleyball court and two soccer fields. The park is also home to the Minuteman Park Harvest Garden program, where kids aged 6 to 12 can learn about growing and maintaining plant life.

Soccer and music festivals at SeatGeek Stadium
Clearing is just northeast of SeatGeek Stadium, the home of the Chicago Red Stars women’s soccer team. The venue is also a hub for music festivals, including Lyrical Lemonade’s Summer Smash festival each June for hip-hop and rap fans and the EDM-focused North Coast Music Festival each Labor Day weekend.
