Cragin
Urban Core Neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois
Cook County 60639, 60641
A modest family neighborhood with city benefits
Cragin is known for its modest home styles, with bungalows and Cape Cod-style houses dominating the architectural theme. "People are looking for consistent prices and a place to live for a long time. This is a family-oriented neighborhood, so people come here to stay," says Chicago Realtor of more than 14 years, Ana Sandoval. With a streetscape alternating between commercial stores, apartment buildings, and brick-sided family homes, all locals' needs are within walking distance. As it's relatively rural, yards are often compact. Houses tend to have the same exterior as many finished brick and stone buildings around them. Many multi-unit buildings are available between the prices of $300,000 and $800,000, but those looking for a single-family home may find a three or four-bedroom residence from $300,000 to $500,000 and condos sometimes run from $100,000 to $500,000.Boundless opportunities for retail and work
"Cragin is a diverse neighborhood with a lot to offer. You can go to these classical American diners and then walk around the corner and see a Polish restaurant and a taco shop," says Sandoval. For easy grocery access, a Walmart Supercenter sits just to the east, and Aldi's, Tony's Fresh Market and Fresh Market Place lie to the west. Due to its location in the city, Cragin hardly lacks variety in its retail options, with several shops and about a dozen restaurants within the neighborhood, with Hangry's being notable. As one of the country's largest cities, Chicago provides a variety of job and career opportunities. The city has a significant financial sector and includes five major economic exchanges. Some of the world's largest corporations, including United Airlines and energy company Exelon, have headquarters in the city. The area's primary employers include neighborhood schools, manufacturing businesses and local healthcare facilities, making jobs relatively easy to find near home.Parks, zoos and tacos in Chicago
Its location in northwest Chicago gives Cragin’s residents access to the city and suburban amenities like Lincoln Park Zoo, one of the nation’s largest zoos. To the west, Schiller Woods is an open place to walk through woodlands and enjoy quiet spaces around the fishing pond. Within the neighborhood are several playgrounds, parks and walking trails, like Blackhawk Park, which features an indoor pool and the Michael and Karyn Lutz Family Center for After School Matters, where teens can participate in a variety of programs. Cragin also partners with other neighborhoods to host events, like the Belmont Cragin Bike Club group rides and the May annual Belmont Cragin Taco Competition.Walkable city streets and an easy commute
Cragin residents have various options for commuting. The nearest stop for Chicago Transit Authority’s L’s Blue Line is about a 5-minute walk from the neighborhood. There are also many public bus stops throughout Cragin. Those who commute by car can get on Diversey or Fullerton Avenue and quickly be on Interstates 94 and 90.A dual-language school system
Students can join Chicago public schools for their academic journey, engaging in the dual-language programs available throughout the district. Charter and private school options are available, but some children attending public school begin at Hanson Park Elementary School. Ranked C on Niche, this kindergarten through eighth-grade school teaches 1300 with a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1. They can move on to Foreman College and Career Academy, a public high school rated C-minus that offers a digital media program.
