A banking background
Gage Park found its footing with a large savings and loan institution, but now it’s grown into a neighborhood of historic homes.
In 2020, the National Register of Historic Places recognized the Gage Park Bungalow District. Starting roughly in the center of Gage Park at 55th Street, the district stretches down to 59th Street, which forms the neighborhood’s southern border.
Bungalow-style homes
The brick bungalow may seem like a modest style: it typically has large spans of windows and a narrow stoop leading to an off-center front door, showing off the home’s basement floor. But it was and is a source of pride for Gage Park residents, since it represents the American Dream. It’s possible to find a four-bedroom updated bungalow with a basement, spreading across nearly 4,000 square feet, in the low $200,000s here.
Most of these homes were built in the 1920s, when Gage Park began to shape its identity—a story fueled in no small part by the presence of Talman Home Federal Savings and Loan. Thanks to Gage Park’s proximity to three railroads, manufacturers were flooding in, bringing steel, glass and chocolate. Workers moved into the bungalows, whose nearness created a sense of uniform style and tight-knit community. Other home styles appeared during the 1940s, like two-flats and Georgian Revivals, but were constructed with brick and limestone to blend with the bungalows.
Brick Two flats are a staple of Home styles in the Gage Park neighborhood.

The aroma of coffee
Carnitas Uruapan on 55th Street is a popular spot for pork tacos, and right next door is Hong Kong Restaurant, which has been serving Chinese food since 1965. Lopez also says that one of the hallmark experiences of Gage Park is smelling coffee in the air. All along Kedzie, you can find numerous other eateries, from fast take-out food to dine-in pizza. It’s also where residents go when they want to run errands at Walgreens and grab groceries at Pete’s Fresh Market. Hop on a bus, if you prefer.

People live here for a long time, and some people that live here have lived here since they were born, or come back to live here if they moved during their childhood. This neighborhood is pet friendly.
