Urban-suburban community seeing resurgence
Situated just 5 miles west of Chicago’s city center, Homan Square is a neighborhood focused on community building and revitalization. “The area has been steadily changing and developing since the late 1990s,” says Homero Garza, a real estate agent with Charles Rutenberg Realty of IL. The neighborhood’s grid-like streets make walking to parks and restaurants easy, and with the Chicago-Kansas City Expressway serving as Homan Square’s northern boundary, commuting to downtown is a breeze.
Densely packed homes in Homan Square
Since 1995, the Foundation for Homan Square has been leading redevelopment efforts, including the construction of hundreds of new housing units and a range of community resources. “When the newly built townhomes first went on the market, they were sold and occupied really quickly, bringing new people to the area,” Garza says. Strolling along the neighborhood’s sidewalks will reveal condo buildings, worker’s cottages, brick three-flats and greystones. There’s a large selection of mixed-income housing, with prices ranging from less than $100,000 to $850,000 for multi-family properties. While yard space is a rarity in Homan Square, front stoops and property lines are often surrounded by metal fencing.

Homan Square Community Center serves as a neighborhood hub
A major aspect of the neighborhood’s revamp was the construction of a 70,000-square-foot community center. There, locals can hop in the indoor pool or play basketball at the gym. Service providers also work with the community center to provide health and family services to residents. Just behind the expansive fieldhouse is Homan Rails Farm, designed to teach sustainable gardening techniques and use the garden plots to grow and harvest seasonal produce. What Homan Square lacks in yard space, it makes up for in walkability to parks. Kids often venture to the playground at Boler Park. Traveling just north of the neighborhood’s residential streets are the sprawling acres of Garfield Park, where locals will find baseball diamonds, soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts. Parkgoers can also enjoy a walk or bike ride on the miles of paved trails that wrap around Garfield Park’s lake before exploring the serene gardens of the conservatory.
The stone entrance and signage at Boler Park is a common sight for Homan Square families.

Employees working within the Illinois Medical District have an easy morning commute, with multiple hospitals and medical centers sitting within 3 miles. Heading in the opposite direction along the thoroughfare connects locals to Chicago O’Hare International Airport, roughly 21 miles away. Homan Square provides easy access to the Blue L Line at the Kedzie-Homan station. Chicago Transit Authority bus stops are also dotted along Homan Avenue and Roosevelt Road.
Creole-inspired dishes and Chicago-style hot dogs
Locals will want to visit one of the locally owned spots along Roosevelt Road for a meal out of the house. Tatianna Barnett, a sales associate with Coldwell Banker Realty, recommends Soule. “It’s one of the newer restaurants in the area and is up-and-coming. People will even travel from outside the neighborhood to go there.” Locals can take their pick from the creole-infused soul food on the menu, from barbeque jerk wings to fried green tomatoes. The line can get lengthy at Dave’s Red Hots, a small dive serving Chicago-style hot dogs. Grocery runs can be made at the Freshway Market nearby.
