Logan Square is one of Chicago’s most sought-after neighborhoods. Its historic architecture, network of green spaces and slew of bars and restaurants continue to attract new residents while keeping the old.
“It’s everything from people who’ve been here for 50 or 60 years, to people who rent, to young professionals just moving in,” says Anna Huls, a Logan Square resident and real estate broker with @ Properties.
Huls says that while Logan Square’s walkability, architecture, green spaces and restaurants make it well known, the close-knit community spirit is what really separates it from other neighborhoods. “People really know their neighbors, and that’s fairly unique to Logan Square,” she says.
Logan Square encompasses 2.5 miles of the Chicago Boulevard system with lush vegetation.

This neighborhood has long been regarded as one of Chicago’s strongest dining scenes as it offers a variety of options. From elevated American cuisine at The Whale to movie nights at The Logan Theatre, “There’s so much shopping, dining and entertainment that you can walk to,” Huls says. “We’re really bad about going to places outside of the neighborhood because of that reason.” Logan Square is home to long-standing restaurants such as Lula Café, an upscale comfort food spot known for its cocktail menu, and newer establishments such as Maplewood Brewery & Distillery, a small brewery with an award-winning beer menu.
On every major street, there’s a selection of shops, diners and more. Milwaukee Avenue, for instance, is lined with a host of thrift stores, taverns, coffee shops, taquerias and even a bowling alley.
The Logan Square Farmers Market has been open since 2005 and attracts around 5,000 people on Sundays for fresh local goods, live music and monthly events such as chef demos and food tastings. “In my opinion, the farmer’s market is one of the best in Chicago and has been a key component of [our] culture,” Huls says. “It’s gotten huge. You can get everything from honey, cheese and fresh bread, to vintage clothes.”
While Logan Square is mostly known for locally owned businesses, it’s just 2 miles east of stores like Target, Walmart and Aldi on Diversey.

Logan Square Dog Park among 10 plus neighborhood parks
There are over 10 parks in Logan Square, including more than 2 miles of the historic Chicago Park and Boulevard System. The 26-mile stretch, which was the first comprehensive system of greenways in a major city in the US, starts at Logan Boulevard Skate Park.
Logan Boulevard, Kedzie Avenue and Humboldt Boulevard all make up the 2.5-mile greenway. Logan Square Park and Palmer Square, which connect the boulevards, are also included. Despite this neighborhood’s bustling feel, these boulevards provide scenic green retreats at the center of the community.
“One thing special about Logan Square is that there are all of these boulevards, and you’ll see families out there having picnics, people sunbathing, having barbeques,” Huls says.
Having such a selection of parks and green spaces is important to Logan Square's culture, as there are many dog owners. Huls says it's one of the most notable things about the neighborhood, pointing out that walking through the neighborhood reveals that it’s a very dog-friendly community.
Logan Square Dog Park allows four-legged friends to run loose, while spots like 606 and Bloomingdale Trail are better for morning walks.
Kosciuszko Park, also known as Koz and named after Polish Revolutionary War hero Tadeusz Kosciuszko, celebrates Logan Square's Polish heritage. Across its more than nine acres, it offers the community an indoor pool, gym, assembly hall, sports fields and courts. After-school and recreational programs for all ages are popular here, as well as Koz’s Movies in the Park series.

Walkable, bikeable and near the Blue Line, Kennedy Expressway
“Logan Square is a great place to live for a lot of reasons, one of them is that it’s close to public transit and highways,” Huls says. “We’re near the Blue Line and the [Kennedy Expressway], which is kind of an underrated perk. When you’re somewhere like the east side, it could take maybe 30 minutes to get to the expressway. Here, it takes maybe 5 minutes.”
Expanded crosswalks and bike lane installations throughout the neighborhood enhance accessibility. Daily needs are close to home, including multiple CVS and Walgreens locations, the Chicago Public Library’s Logan Square Branch, and several family health and urgent care medical centers. The downtown commute is about 7 miles.
The Blue Line has two stops in Logan Square, connecting the neighborhood to O'Hare and downtown.
Logan Square is only a 30-minute drive to downtown Chicago.

A diverse, historic housing stock
Logan Square's character is largely defined by its massive 19th-century Victorian revivals, sprawling Greystone mansions and other historic architectural styles. Longstanding structures have been converted into multiunit buildings or upgraded to modern standalone residences, and new construction has also been added.
This fusion of history and modernity is showcased in the diverse housing styles. Greystone three-flats built in the early 1900s may stand side by side with newly constructed shingle duplexes. Longstanding Tudor Revival might sit adjacent to modern traditional builds.
There aren’t sprawling yards. Instead, most homes are tall, narrow and separated from one another by just a few feet. Narrow streets are paired with wide sidewalks, shaded by a canopy of established trees.
Older condo and townhouse units sell between $165,000 and $400,000, while new constructions can sell anywhere between $450,000 and $865,000. Entire multifamily buildings, on the other hand, sell between $875,000 and $1.6 million. Most single-family homes that need some love sell between $260,000 and $400,000. Move-in ready options sell between $450,000 and $800,000. Homes east of North Kimball Avenue are outliers, however, generally selling for upwards of $1.2 million.

Art exhibits, concerts at Comfort Station on Milwaukee Ave
In a community with so much community pride, it’s no surprise that block parties are a big deal in Logan Square.
“I host a block party every year, and almost every summer, if you drive up and down the streets, you’ll see other block parties,” Huls says. “I love how different we are compared to other neighborhoods in Chicago; we have a really big sense of community.”
The Comfort Station on Milwaukee Avenue has co-opted a Chicago Transit Authority station to host trending art exhibitions and live concerts. Residents can also experience Lucha Libre, an annual free masked wrestling event that draws hundreds to the park for matches involving flips, stunts and heavyweight stars.

Strong PTA at Brentano Elementary Math & Science Academy
Logan Square is home to over a dozen schools. Brentano Elementary Math & Science Academy is among many public elementary options. The elementary-middle school has a C-plus rating on Niche and serves pre-k through 8th-grade students. It’s mostly known for its caring faculty and strong PTA, Huls says.
“The parent organization is very involved,” she says. “A few years back the mayor was going to close a bunch of schools including Brentano and and the parents and faculty banded together to save the school.”
ASPIRA Business and Finance High School and the ASPIRA Early College High School are two popular next steps. Focused on developing leadership qualities, ASPIRA schools work to lessen academic performance gaps in multicultural student populations while offering a bilingual program and opportunities to earn college credits. The business and finance school has a C-minus rating on Niche, while ASPIRA Early College has a C-plus.
Logan Square's private Catholic schools include St. John Berchmans, which has an A-plus and serves pre-K through eighth graders.
Brentano Math & Science Academy has 685 students and serves grades PK and K-8.
St. John Berchmans School is a private school with an overall A+ grade according to Niche.

Centennial Monument among historic landmarks and attractions
The center of Logan Square is illuminated by the soaring marble Illinois Centennial Monument designed by Henry Bacon, the same architect responsible for the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. This nearly 70-foot Greek marble column crested by an eagle was erected in 1918 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Illinois' statehood.
Vestiges of Logan Square's Scandinavian past remain in the spectacular Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church. Also known as Minnekirken and the Red Church, it stands as an emblem of Logan Square's cultural and architectural history. While these landmarks don’t attract as much attention as spots such as Chicago's Bean and Buckingham Fountain, tourists sometimes find their way into Logan Square to visit.
