Ravenswood
Urban Core Neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois
Cook County 60613, 60625, 60640
Condos, brick homes and renovated properties
Housing stock flourished in the wake of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, as people looked for places to rebuild houses for a lower cost than in the city. The neighborhood was populated by a mix of workers who found jobs in Chicago’s brickyards, and it’s possible to find brick two-flats from the turn of the century going for sale. Prices for such properties start around $725,000 although it’s possible to find plenty of two-bedroom condo units in the $300,000 range. But it’s not uncommon to find houses going for $1 million or even $1.5 million here. These can be contemporary colonials built in the 2010s, or a stone or brick multi-story home with bay windows, built in the early 1900s but recently renovated. Ravenswood Manor offers historic flair with the Arts and Crafts style featuring prominently. Homebuyers will often see small front lawns, sometimes behind iron fences, but for the most part streetscapes are urban.Green spaces near lakeside fun
The neighborhood is dotted with parks. Located on the south end, Welles Park includes a playground and a variety of sports facilities. Winnemac Park is quite green after a 1999 renovation added 200 trees, scenic prairie grass and a nature trail. To the west, Ravenswood Manor Park offers a playground, outdoor space and concerts throughout the summer. More adventure awaits on the lake: a mile east is Montrose Beach, and Cricket Hill offers peaceful views of the water from its perch.Community service at Senn High
Ravenswood Elementary is a kindergarten through 8th grade institution, with a student-teacher ratio of 13-to-1. Niche gives it a B-plus overall. The school is well integrated with the community, putting student projects out for display, like an 8-foot-tall wind instrument designed to demonstrate physics in action. Senn High has a larger number of students, but it too earns a B-minus. Community service is a large part of the education delivered, and students can participate in organizations like the Red Cross Club. Bold Grecian columns make the school standout on the landscape.Artsy events and a farmers market
The neighborhood promotes local creativity with the Ravenswood Art Walk every September, a two-day event with art vendors, food trucks and live music. The craft beer scene gets its own special spotlight with Ravenswood on Tap in the summer, where brews, musical performances and games bring residents out for two days. June through October brings a farmers market on Damen Avenue, held on Wednesday afternoons, just a two-minute walk from the Ravenswood Metra station.Multiple transportation options
There is a Metra station on Lawrence Avenue with multiple bus connections going east and west. Just a mile to the east is the Lake Shore Drive for those who need to reach downtown by car. Route 41 runs along Foster Avenue to the north of the neighborhood and turns northwest into Lincoln Avenue, which is a preferred corridor for reaching the big-box stores of Lincolnwood. Foster taken to the east will deliver travelers to the popular entertainment and cultural destinations of Andersonville, such as the Swedish American Museum. Kindred Hospital is located on the west end, reachable by Montrose Avenue.Microbreweries on Malt Row
Microbreweries make their presence known in Ravenswood. The neighborhood’s namesake avenue is filled with industrial buildings that now operate as sites for people to enjoy craft beer. The avenue’s intersection with Lawrence Avenue puts residents in touch with a Metra station and a Mariano’s, where they can shop for groceries. Overall, brewery names like Dovetail, Empirical and Band of Bohemia add to the area’s hip factor. But in keeping with the neighborhood’s classically charming identity, it’s not all about neo-boutiques. Elevated pizza places like Spacca Napoli are indicative of the tried-and-true ethos surging through the local dining scene. Filipino cuisine makes an appearance, too, reminding residents that they live in a melting pot.
