Nonprofit neighborhood organization
Roscoe Village Neighbors is a nonprofit organization that focuses on keeping the neighborhood village-like and vibrant. Events are planned throughout the year, including the popular Retro on Roscoe, which takes place in early August. During that event, the streets are lined with antique vendors and artisans. Live music throughout the weekend provides entertainment. The organization plans a special welcome in a meet and greet event for new neighbors. There’s also a Clean and Green Day in late April, where volunteers help clean up the neighborhood.Rules on housing
Another aspect of keeping a village feel is the rules for renovating a house or new construction. “There are instances where builders are changing a building from a multi-unit to a single-family home, and we want to ensure it doesn’t get too big,” David says, who is also vice president of the Roscoe Valley Neighbors group. “We don’t want to see a four-story building go up. It would take away the vibe we have.” There’s a mix of condos, single-family and multi-family units. Newer homes are built in the classic style with modern takes on classic Foursquare design, which is between $1 and $2 million. These houses have plenty of space, between 4,200 and 5,200 square feet. Some older homes, with some as old as the 1890s, may be slightly under $1 million and have between 2,000 and 2,500 square feet of living space. Duplexes and condos are priced between $500,000 and $700,000. Fifty-one percent of the people living in Roscoe Village are homeowners.Unique shops and restaurants
Roscoe Street is the main business thoroughfare through the neighborhood, providing endless opportunities for food and retail. Le Sud means ‘the south,’ so the Mediterranean restaurant that bears that name in Roscoe Village concentrates on cuisine popular in southern France. If the weather is nice, folks will be dining outdoors on the patio on the Oakley Avenue side of the building. American comfort food in a casual setting is what the experience is at John’s Place. They serve weekend brunch on weekends starting at 10 a.m. Roscoe Books is an independent bookstore that focuses on providing a wide variety of books and hosting book club discussions. “I worked with the store owner to secure the space,” David says. “She opened the business when bookstores were falling out of favor. The business has thrived.” Shangri-La Vintage Clothing Store offers customers the chance to go back in time with fashion statements for men and women. The neighborhood's west side is the grocery shopping destination, with a Jewel-Osco, Mariano’s and The Paulina Meat Market.Recreation by the river
The western part of Roscoe Village finds the North Branch of the Chicago River flowing by. Behind Lane Tech College Prep High School is Clark Park. Among its 22 acres, there’s open green space and a paved trail around the park’s perimeter for biking/walking or jogging. Kerry Wood Cubs Field, named after the former Cub pitching great, is a baseball diamond used by Chicago Public Schools with over 1,000 seats. Chicago Rowing Foundation is on the river, where rowing lessons also occur.Options for needing a ride
Chicago Transit Authority buses are plentiful around the neighborhood streets, including Damen, Addison and Western Avenue stops. Wrigley Field is only a few miles away to watch the Chicago Cubs play home baseball games, and there are the occasional concerts. Walking there from Roscoe Village is possible, allowing at least a half hour to complete the journey. The nearest “L” station is the Addison or the Paulina stop on the brown line.Highly rated city schools
The City of Chicago School District 299 features two schools in the PK-12 process, with some kids in Roscoe Village attending Audubon Elementary through eighth grade. The student-teacher ratio is 13-to-1, and the school gets a B-plus overall Niche grade. Lane Tech College Prep High School receives an A-plus rating and is a magnet school with selective enrollment for grades seven through 12. The Computer Science Department is recognized as one of the largest and most innovative in the county.
