Home styles range from brick ranch-style homes to courtyard condos

Most streets offer solid brick ranch-style homes from the mid- to late 20th century. Split-level homes appear throughout the area, adding variety while maintaining overall character. Prices usually range from the low $400,000s to the low $700,000s. The area also has a fair share of mid-rise condo buildings with courtyard settings and private parking. HOA fees often cover utilities like heat, water or gas, keeping monthly costs more predictable. Units typically sell between the low $100,000s and the mid-$200,000s.

The neighborhood is fairly small compared to surrounding areas. Streets are also highly walkable, so you're likely to see familiar faces out and about each day. "When the neighborhood was planned over 50 years ago, the developer's goal was to create a community-oriented neighborhood, and they've definitely succeeded at meeting that goal," says Realtor April Kibler with Coldwell Banker Realty.

Schiller Woods offers trails, fishing ponds and winter sports

The expansive Schiller Woods preserve borders the neighborhood, offering acres of woodlands, prairie and wetlands to explore along the Des Plaines River. You can hike or bike for miles along the Des Plaines River Trail before taking a rest at one of the park's picnic groves. People also like to spend their afternoons fishing at Schiller Pond. The preserve stays busy even in winter. Hiking trails become cross-country skiing paths, and "local kids love visiting the preserve to use the popular sledding hill," Kibler says.

Commuters use North Cumberland to reach highways and the Blue Line

North Cumberland Avenue runs through the community, connecting drivers to state Route 19 and Interstate 90. The avenue and its cross streets experience heavy daily traffic, which can lead to higher noise levels in parts of the neighborhood. Commuters can reach in about 15 miles, or 40 minutes depending on traffic. Public transit options include CTA and Pace suburban buses and the nearby Cumberland Blue Line station. The neighborhood is also near Chicago O'Hare International Airport, which means residents will often heard planes overhead.
