A small city with a big personality

Chickasha is a bustling little community of commercial life and social activity in Grady County, Oklahoma. “We are a city that’s growing,” says broker Shari Brunt from Always Real Estate and Chickasha local for the past 50 years. “And we still have that small-town feel. We don’t have a lot of chain stores here, and we have a great Chamber of Commerce that everyone’s involved in. Everyone helps everyone.” When locals see their neighbors out and about in Chickasha, they won’t hesitate to stop and catch up.

Christmas town Chickasha

For over 30 years, the Chickasha Festival of Light rings in the holidays for the community. “We are a Christmas town,” Brunt says. “We have a 50-foot-tall Leg Lamp statue from ‘A Christmas Story’ that people come from all over to see.” The city decks Shannon Spring Park in over four million lights with a 172-foot Christmas tree at the center. One portion has the lights synchronized to holiday music. Visitors can walk, drive or take a horse-drawn carriage through the lights. The festival also offers outdoor ice skating, a carousel, a Ferris wheel and food trucks. In the summer, the Grady County Free Fair occurs on the fairgrounds. This tradition has entertained the county for over 100 years with beauty pageants, tractor pulls, livestock shows and a carnival.

Mini golf and local music in Chickasha

Residents can grocery shop at the Walmart Supercenter, just under 2 miles away from the city center in Southland Shopping Center. Williams Foods is another option right in the city center. Right across from the Leg Lamp is Brandy’s Bar and Grill — the go-to spot for old-fashioned burgers and fries. For something sweet, Uptown Scoops makes all of its ice cream in-house and frequently adds new flavors to the menu. Jungle Ice Fun Zone is a pub with mini golf. “Adults drink cocktails while the kids play mini golf outside,” Brunt says. Legends Pub House and Venue is the local venue, offering concerts once or twice a week for locals.

Growing Chickasha and 1940s homes

Many homes in Chickasha are older ranch styles dating back to the 40s. Lots are usually 7,000 square feet, with homes placed away from the street for more space and privacy. With recent city expansion, newer Craftsman and remodels are more available and common. “We have three really large new developments, and one is a gated community,” Brunt says. “But this is still a very affordable place to live.” Homes in this neighborhood will start at $150,000, but newer remodels can rise to $250,000.

Play disc golf at Shannon Springs Park

At Shannon Springs Park, residents can walk along the available trails, including the bridge that crosses the lake. Anglers can fish in the pond, and a pool and splash pad are open during the summer. The disc golf course encourages locals to test their skills with friends or solo. Washita Valley Park has a mural dedicated to the town’s history. Athletes can take advantage of the amenities here, including the baseball diamonds, basketball courts and soccer and football fields. Twenty-two miles from the town is Lake Chickasha, where people can boat, swim and hike in the Oklahoma scenery. Fishing is permitted with a state license.

Take flight at Chickasha Municipal Airport

Getting around Chickasha requires a car, but 4th Street, or U.S. Route 81, runs through the neighborhood and is lined with many shopping centers. I-44, also called the H.E. Bailey Turnpike, connects Chickasha with surrounding areas and Oklahoma City, which is 45 miles north. Chickasha is home to the Chickasha Municipal Airport, which supports local and commercial flyers. Because of its central location, many amateur pilots use this airport as a midway pitstop on cross-country trips. Grady Memorial Hospital is located within the city.
