Next to the nation’s largest Air Force Reserve base
The U.S. Air Force inactivated Westover Air Force Base in 1974, turning the Chicopee military facility into a reserve base. However, Westover’s importance to the Massachusetts city was far from over. A developer converted parts of the base into industrial parks, where manufacturers and logistics companies have set up shop. Today, Westover Air Reserve Base is the largest employer in Chicopee, and more than 4,000 military members and civilians work on site. The Westover neighborhood is a small suburban community at the doorstep of this economic engine. Though the air base is now a reserve base, it still draws residents to the Western Massachusetts city north of Springfield. “One of my listings in Chicopee just sold to a couple from Oklahoma, and he’s a pilot who came to work at the base,” says Chicopee resident and Skye Mountain Realty broker Patt Gajda. “People are still coming to the area to work at the base.”
Westover even has its own municipal airport.

Large supply of postwar homes
Westover Air Force Base was instrumental in supporting 1950s Cold War operations, and the Westover neighborhood was built up to house service members and workers. Ranches and minimal traditional homes constructed then still line the neighborhood’s streets. Mobile home parks and scattered Colonial-inspired new traditional houses have been added since. Single-family home prices range from $250,000 to $350,000. Condos are concentrated on the north end, selling between $175,000 and $220,000. Though the base is inactive, aircraft still sometimes take off and land. However, typical flight paths don’t cross over the neighborhood, so noise is minimal.

Pet-friendly park honors service dogs
In 2024, the city opened Western Massachusetts Post 9/11 and Service Dog Memorial Park in the neighborhood. The 7-acre green space memorializes the people and service dogs killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. In addition to an off-leash dog park, it features a series of wooded walking trails. Southeast of the air reserve base, Chicopee Memorial State Park encompasses more than 500 acres of forest surrounding a reservoir. The park is a popular spot for bank fishing and swimming, while hikers, cyclists and cross-country skiers have access to more than 20 miles of trails.
