Tiny riverfront town with ample green space
Bisected by Route 29, Peoria’s Chillicothe neighborhood sits between miles of open farmland on one side and Goose Lake on the other. Home to approximately 6,000 residents, this riverfront town features a patchwork of residential streets and parks scattered throughout. Despite its five square miles of area, the vibe here is definitely small town, with a community center and a handful of restaurants to occupy afternoons and weekends.
Fishing and disc golf at Shore Acres Park
With several parks in the neighborhood, deciding where to spend the afternoon can be difficult. Shore Acres Park is a great spot to relax by the water, watch the squirrels run around or play frisbee in the field. The latter is great because there is a dedicated disc golf course for hours of fun. It isn’t recommended that locals swim in the river, but it’s excellent for fishing instead. Species like largemouth bass, walleye, and channel catfish populate the waters. A bit farther south is Three Sisters Park, a unique spot with rental facilities for more significant group events. Adults teach kids the traditional method of farming in the spring as it was done in 1918, from seed to soil, across six educational stations. Halloween lovers rejoice: Spider Hill, a yearly haunted house attraction, repurposes the park's mansion and trail for a spooky and sensational night out.

Mid-to-late-twentieth century homes in Chillicothe
Residential streets intersect in typical suburban fashion. Although Route 29 runs through the middle of the community, it doesn’t influence the layout of homes and businesses on each side. Approximately five square miles of land are home to bungalows and ranch-style houses. Many of these builds hail from the mid-to-late-twentieth century. Bungalows appear with brick or vinyl facades and average three bedrooms. Since the area is somewhat rural, the yard sizes vary. The ranch-style homes are simple and neat, most with attached or separate garages. Pricing in this neighborhood ranges from about $75,000 to $175,000.
