The first capital of Ohio
The first capital of its state, Chillicothe has long stood out as a focal point for south-central Ohio. For at least 50 miles in any direction, Chillicothe is the only city with a population of over 20,000. As a result, the town serves as an economic center for many of the smaller surrounding communities. With a finger on the pulse of its American roots, Chillicothe wears its history on its sleeve.

Historic Victorians downtown
The median price for homes in Chillicothe is in the low $200,000s, below the national median in the low $400,000s. Many of the city's best-preserved historic homes line Fairway Avenue, while more recently built houses surround Adena State Memorial. The eastern side of the town is the location of many post-war midcentury homes. “If you’re looking for a Victorian home, we’ve got plenty of them downtown,” says Diane Carnes, a broker with ERA Martin and Associates. “The city is known for its history, and those places are pieces of it.”
The Adena Regional Medical Center is the region’s most convenient hospital and emergency room. Between the main site and several satellite healthcare centers, Adena Health System employs nearly 3,000 people. Like many towns in southern Ohio, Chillicothe's manufacturing industry is a major job creator, with companies like Kenmore employing over 2,000 people. Other significant employers include Pixelle Specialty Solutions, the Ohio Department of Corrections, the Chillicothe VA Medical Center and Ohio University – Chillicothe.

Native American history and heritage
With 17 parks and facilities on over 200 acres, Chillicothe’s Park and Recreation Department oversees a wide variety of public amenities, including the Yocatangee skatepark, the Paint Creek Recreational Trail and the Shawnee Wetlands Preserve. The Adena State Memorial is a 5,000-acre estate containing the mansion that was home to Thomas Worthington, who spearheaded Ohio's statehood in the 1800s. An abundance of Native American mounds, artifacts and sites has led the National Park Service to designate Chillicothe as a National Heritage Area. “That’s on the same level as the pyramids and the Grand Canyon,” says Carnes. “It’s a very big deal, and we’re very proud of it.” Many of those ancient sites are at Hopewell Culture National Historical Park.

The Feast of the Flowering Moon is a festival held every Memorial Day weekend that celebrates Native American culture with exhibits, music and rides. Based out of V.A. Memorial Stadium, the Chillicothe Paints are a Prospect League baseball team that’s won the league championship four times since 2010. Shopping at the Chillicothe Mall
The city is a destination for much of the surrounding area’s shopping needs, with a variety of big box, grocery and retail stores in and around the Chillicothe Mall. Casual eateries are also popular, with a number of Mexican and Asian options. “We don’t have any really fancy stores—you’d have to go to Columbus for that,” says Carnes. “But anything you really need is here.”
