The first capital of Ohio

The first capital of its state, Chillicothe has long stood out as a focal point for south-central Ohio. For at least 50 miles in any direction, Chillicothe is the only city with a population of over 20,000. As a result, the town serves as an economic center for many of the smaller surrounding communities. With a finger on the pulse of its American roots, Chillicothe wears its history on its sleeve.

Historic Victorians downtown

The median price for homes in Chillicothe is in the low $200,000s, below the national median in the low $400,000s. Many of the city's best-preserved historic homes line Fairway Avenue, while more recently built houses surround Adena State Memorial. The eastern side of the town is the location of many post-war midcentury homes. “If you’re looking for a Victorian home, we’ve got plenty of them downtown,” says Diane Carnes, a broker with ERA Martin and Associates. “The city is known for its history, and those places are pieces of it.”

The Adena Regional Medical Center is the region’s most convenient hospital and emergency room. Between the main site and several satellite healthcare centers, Adena Health System employs nearly 3,000 people. Like many towns in southern Ohio, Chillicothe's manufacturing industry is a major job creator, with companies like Kenmore employing over 2,000 people. Other significant employers include Pixelle Specialty Solutions, the Ohio Department of Corrections, the Chillicothe VA Medical Center and Ohio University – Chillicothe.

Native American history and heritage

With 17 parks and facilities on over 200 acres, Chillicothe’s Park and Recreation Department oversees a wide variety of public amenities, including the Yocatangee skatepark, the Paint Creek Recreational Trail and the Shawnee Wetlands Preserve. The Adena State Memorial is a 5,000-acre estate containing the mansion that was home to Thomas Worthington, who spearheaded Ohio's statehood in the 1800s. An abundance of Native American mounds, artifacts and sites has led the National Park Service to designate Chillicothe as a National Heritage Area. “That’s on the same level as the pyramids and the Grand Canyon,” says Carnes. “It’s a very big deal, and we’re very proud of it.” Many of those ancient sites are at Hopewell Culture National Historical Park.

Live performances at The Majestic

Chillicothe’s artistic and cultural scene is largely centered around the city’s downtown, including the Railroad Museum, the Mighty Children’s Museum and the Lucy Webb Hayes Heritage Center. Constructed in 1853, the Majestic is one of the country’s oldest continuously running theatres and hosts touring musicians, comedians and other live performers. The Feast of the Flowering Moon is a festival held every Memorial Day weekend that celebrates Native American culture with exhibits, music and rides. Based out of V.A. Memorial Stadium, the Chillicothe Paints are a Prospect League baseball team that’s won the league championship four times since 2010. Performed annually at the Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheatre, the theatrical production of Tecumseh! has drawn in millions during its run of over 40 years.

Shopping at the Chillicothe Mall

The city is a destination for much of the surrounding area’s shopping needs, with a variety of big box, grocery and retail stores in and around the Chillicothe Mall. Casual eateries are also popular, with a number of Mexican and Asian options. “We don’t have any really fancy stores—you’d have to go to Columbus for that,” says Carnes. “But anything you really need is here.”

A straight shot to Columbus

The city is directly connected to several important highways, including U.S. Routes 23 and 50. The nearest major metropolitan area is Columbus, 50 miles north. “It’s an hour drive to Columbus,” says Carnes. “Straight north--You don’t even need to turn your steering wheel.” During business days, Chillicothe Transit System runs a bus service with stops all over the city. John Glenn Columbus Airport offers over 100 flights a day all over the world.

Partnership between Chillicothe High and Ohio University

The area's students are served by the Chillicothe City School District, which has a C-plus from Niche. Ohio University – Chillicothe has over 2,000 enrolled students and works with Chillicothe High School through a College Credit Plus program, allowing students to take college courses while finishing their high school diploma.

Important to know

FBI statistics show that Chillicothe had fewer instances of violent and property crime per capita than Ohio and the country at large.

Chillicothe has short, snowy winters and warm, humid summers. Due to its position on the Scioto River, the city has minor to moderate risk of flooding, and flood insurance is required on homes in high-risk areas.
