Tall palm trees and quiet suburban streets define the landscape of the neighborhood of Sunbow. The area grew out of the boom in population following World War II when several of the local factory workers and service members supporting the war effort chose to put down roots. The community of Sunbow was established in the late 1990s and has grown into a booming suburb just six miles south of Chula Vista proper, within a short bus or car ride from schools, parks and major freeways.

Locals live along wide suburban streets with landscaped grass and rock garden lawns. Sidewalks fringed by shrubbery and tall palm streets are perfect for cyclists and joggers, and there are several local bus stations providing transportation to local shopping centers and Downtown Chula Vista. Two-story single-family houses take up much of the residential landscape of Sunbow, however there are a small number of townhomes and condos also available. Most area homes reflect the stucco facades and tile roofing of Spanish-revival designs, as well as more contemporary additions like roof-mounted solar panels and multi-car garages. Townhouses and condos feature community amenities such as community pools and picnic areas. Home prices in Sunbow range from $300,000 for condos in need of a bit of T.L.C. to large houses running as high as $900,000 or more.

Public school students are served by the Chula Vista Elementary School District and the Sweetwater Union High School District, beginning their academic careers at primary schools like Hedenkamp Elementary. This school has an overall A-minus Niche rating and teaches from kindergarten through sixth grade. Students move on to intermediate and secondary institutions such as Rancho Del Rey Middle and Otay Ranch Senior High School. Both schools have an A-minus or above Niche rating, and the latter high school has athletic programs that have graduated players for NFL teams like the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Local parks and recreational centers give locals a place to get active and engage with the community. Horizon Park is a large park with playgrounds, basketball courts, picnic shelters and a serene garden with beautiful desert flora. Veterans Park Community Complex is a community center that includes an outdoor skate and dog park, athletic fields, and indoor facilities that offer classes in fitness, dance music and arts and crafts for all ages. Nearby Greg Rogers is another large park which also offers a skatepark and athletic fields, including an extensive disc golf course.

Locals frequent the shops and restaurants available at shopping centers like The Plaza at Sunbow. Regional grocery stores like Ralph’s offer fresh produce, bulk foodstuffs and other household necessities. Franchise vendors like Great Clips offer a range of salon services and products. Enjoy a favorite local spot TJ Oyster, a regional franchise with a large assortment of seafood and a selection of local beers to try out. There are also plenty of national franchise restaurants like Starbucks and Subway scattered around the area.

Local bus stops and major freeways give Sunbow residents access to the best of Chula Vista.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
