Madison Place has historic homes and quick commutes to Cincinnati
During the holiday season, streetlamps on Plainville Road are decorated with wreaths and string lights. Plainville Road is the main commercial thoroughfare in Madison Place, a Columbia Township neighborhood that works to preserve its early 20th-century charm. With the exception of a few small restaurants, a handful of auto dealerships and a highly-rated Montessori school, the area is entirely residential. Most homes were constructed throughout the 1920s and ‘30s, and, given its proximity to Cincinnati, Madison Place is especially popular with commuters. The larger city is about 10 miles away. Mandi Beecroft, branch manager at Mariemont’s public library, says it’s a community where people stay for a while. “There’s a lot of young families here and definitely people who live here for years…The youth librarians get to watch the kids grow up,” she says.
Home styles dating back to the early 20th century
There’s an eclectic mix of architectural styles throughout Madison Place. Those looking to settle down here will find American Foursquares, bungalows, Cape Cods and Tutor-inspired houses. Lot sizes are typically less than 5,000 square feet, and home prices range from $200,000 to about $400,000. Cars park in tucked-under garages, narrow driveways and sometimes on the street. Madison Place is one of the most popular neighborhoods in the Cincinnati metro area, and homes here sell after an average of eight days.
Cincinnati City School District, Montessori programs and library book clubs
Students attend public schools within the Cincinnati City School District, where options include John P. Parker School for prekindergarten through sixth grade and Shroder High School for grades seven through 12. The schools earn a C-plus and C-minus from Niche, respectively. Shroder requires students to participate in community service projects throughout high school, and some take part in the Pharmacy Technician program, after which they’re certified to pursue Pharmacy Technician positions at Kroger. The Good Shepherd Catholic Montessori school earns an A-minus and is within walking distance for many students. Beecroft also speaks to the educational programs at the Mariemont Branch Library, where book clubs are especially popular. “It’s a very strong reading community,” she says. "People enjoy the opportunity to discuss books, and the social aspect is appealing.”
Playgrounds, a bell tower and cyclists beside the Little Miami River
Public parks near Madison Place include Bramble Park, which has a playground and picnic shelters, and Dogwood Park in Mariemont, which is famous for its Carillon Bells. Along with its stone bell tower, it also has a wildlife and bird sanctuary, shaded walking trails and athletic fields. Whiskey Creek flows south toward Mariemont Garden Park, where there are community garden plots available for purchase on the banks of the Little Miami River. Beecroft, who moved to the area a few years ago, says she quickly learned that “there are a lot of bikers here.” The number of cyclists can be attributed to the Little Miami Scenic Trail, which currently spans more than 70 miles and is still being extended.
Commercial Activity along Plainville Road and more in Mariemont
Along Plainville Road, which serves as Madison Place’s westernmost border, there’s an assortment of small restaurants and auto dealerships. Curry bento boxes and naan grilled cheeses are ordered to go at Hurry Curry, and Bramble Patch serves cold beers and cocktails. Regulars can expect a packed bar when the Bengals are playing. There are sit-down bistros, a Graeter’s Ice Cream and a movie theater in downtown Mariemont, which is about a mile from Madison Place. The Wooster Pike Kroger is the go-to for groceries.
Quick commutes to Cincinnati from Madison Place
There are multiple options for commuting into Cincinnati, which is about 10 miles, or 20 minutes, from Madison Place. Drivers can take Interstate 71 or U.S. Route 50, and Bus 11, part of Cincinnati’s metro system, stops along Plainville Road. Beecroft says it’s common for locals to bike between towns via the Little Miami Scenic Trail. The nearest airport is Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International, and hospitals include Mercy Health - Anderson, The Christ Hospital and Cincinnati Children’s. The medical industry is a key player in the area’s economy.
