Eye catching murals and busy city streets
Something unique always draws the eye when walking along the streets of the historic Over-The-Rhine neighborhood, or OTR, as the locals call it. Stroll along Main, Race, Vine or 12th Streets and spot the colorful murals that pay tribute to the area’s German heritage or famous natives, like soul singer James Brown in “Mr. Dynamite.” It can also be the Germania Building’s Renaissance revival architecture or the Victorian architecture of the Cincinnati Music Hall. In conjunction with the distinct architecture, it’s a mecca for Cincinnati's most popular restaurants and nightlife. Locals are spoiled to a diverse mixture of cuisines and extensive options for fun, including the Cincinnati Music Hall and the Hard Rock Casino. Findlay Market is the area’s premier grocery and eating spot. “A lot of people believe a big choice for living in Over-the-Rhine is living close to Findlay Market. It’s the region's premier grocery store,” says Sami Stewart, Marketing and Communication Coordinator for Findlay Market. “That impacts them on getting the groceries they need, getting a bite to eat or hanging out with friends and grabbing a drink.” These vibrant, pedestrian-friendly streets embody an upbeat downtown. Folks moving to the area are drawn to the neighborhood’s convenience, diversity and extensive amenities. “It’s a diverse community. There are a ton of amazing restaurants and bars. It’s getting more visitors every year,” Stewart says. “It’s a super diverse and dynamic neighborhood that’s constantly growing.”

Findlay Market and extensive restaurant selection
Findlay Market is a 19th-century wrought iron frame structure and Ohio’s oldest public market. “The weekends are the busiest. A lot of people come to do weekly grocery hauls,” Stewart says. Stock up on the cheese at The Rhined. Their tiny shop focuses on domestic cheeses and has an extensive wine selection. Come Saturday and Sunday, residents convene on the streets for the fresh produce at the farmer's market. Chef Jose Salazar’s Goose and Elder restaurant is an ideal brunch spot offering dishes like pancakes and chicken wings. But outside the market, Rhinegeist Brewery is a happening spot located in an old bottling plant. Gather with friends for beers and ciders within their large taproom, or head to the rooftop on warmer days. Mr. Pitifuls gives the best of both worlds, being a laid-back weekday bar and a hopping nightclub on the weekends. Waffles of all kinds can be found at the Taste of Belgium. Their specialty Liege waffle, which is a sweeter Belgian waffle, is a neighborhood favorite. Locals get in early to snag a seat at The Eagle, where southern sides and fried chicken are the most popular dishes.

Italianate condos and Greek Revival townhouses
Just over 360 acres, the area is packed with more than 1,000 historic buildings. Most homes are Italianate and brick brownstone condos with sprinkles of single-family townhouses. Nearly 89% of OTR residents rent their properties. Italianate-style homes feature decorative windows, ornamental cornices and elaborate entryways. One-bedroom condos can cost from $150,000 to $400,000. Two-bedroom or larger condos sit in Greek Revival buildings, which blend into first-floor retail spaces. These properties start at $350,000. Single-family townhouses typically begin at $750,000. Along the 1800 block of Vine Street there, the neighborhood is expected to convert 12 buildings into mixed-use development spaces. That includes 51 apartments and commercial spaces. This initiative is called the Findlay Parkside Project.

Lively events offered year round
Findlay Market also hosts monthly events. “The market hosts Cincinnati Reds opening parade in March,” Stewart says. “There’s a huge parade that starts at Findlay Market and goes to the Banks. Then, everyone goes to the game afterward. It’s super fun with everyone coming together.” Stadiums for hometown teams, including the Bengals, Bearcats and Reds, are less than two miles away for those looking to cheer on their team. From April to October, Cincinnati musicians and bands perform on the weekends. Mitten Fest and Fall Fest are seasonal events at Washington Park that allow neighbors to meet and mingle. Cincinnati Music Hall is one of the city’s historic treasures, hosting monthly events. While its primary focus is classical music, it often carries contemporary artists with names like Prince, Elton Jong, and Frank Sinatra.

I have been in OTR for a long time as I completed my undergraduate degree at the AAC, and now live in the neighborhood. It has its risks as any urban neighborhood does, but its come a long way in the last five years in terms of safety and popularity.
