Salem Heights offers quiet streets and easy access to Cincinnati

In Anderson Township, Salem Heights is a quiet suburb located around 12 miles from downtown Cincinnati, across the Ohio River. The streets are well-maintained and often end in cul-de-sacs, giving the area a very residential feel. Still, Salem Heights is close to city amenities. “It’s very convenient to kind of everything,” says Ragan McKinney, an Anderson Township resident and broker and Realtor with Ragan McKinney Real Estate. “You can go up the hill for lots of shopping and places to eat, or you can go down the hill for all of the entertainment because Anderson [Township] sits up on a hill.” Salem Heights features top-rated schools, a range of housing options at various price points and multiple parks nearby.

Housing ranges from 1920s renovations to new construction homes

Housing styles vary from Split-levels and raised ranches to new construction and larger transitional houses. Some properties date back to the 1920s but have been renovated more recently. There is also quite a bit of new construction. Homes under 3,000 square feet often range from around $150,000 to $630,000. Larger properties start at about $670,000 and can go as high as over $1.5 million. The median lot size is over a quarter of an acre. Homes tend to stay on the market for an average of 15 days, compared to the national average of 53 days.

Forest Hills School District has top-rated schools

School assignments vary by street, but the majority of students in Salem Heights are zoned for Maddux Elementary School, which has an A-minus grade from Niche. Nagel Middle School also has an A-minus score, while Anderson High School earns an A grade. High school students can study at higher education institutions, including the University of Cincinnati and Sinclair Community College, through the College Credit Plus program. Forest Hills School District allows intra-district transfers based on space availability.

Laverty and Beech Acres parks offer trails, playgrounds and sports

In Salem Heights, Laverty Park is about 9 acres with a lot of open space. Residents can bike on a paved trail, play basketball or take the kids to the playground. Nearby Beech Acres Park spans around 45 acres and offers amenities that include a playground with water features, an amphitheater, sports courts and a skate park. The Anderson Parks RecPlex is across the street from the park. It features a gym and rooms for hosting programs and events throughout the year. “Whether you want to be a hiker and go to the parks, which are fantastic, or want to golf, there are two really nice country clubs,” McKinney says. “There’s really something for everyone.”

Salem Heights has a mix of small eateries and nearby retail options

There are a handful of shops and restaurants in the area, including Mio’s Pizza Mt. Washington, Gyrolicious Grill and Tome Books & Novelteas. Salem Garden is a bar and grill that’s been open since 1926. Several shopping centers are located off Five Mile Road. Anderson Towne Center has a Macy’s, an AMC Dine-in Theater and a Kroger grocery store. Riverbend Music Center, in the Coldstream neighborhood, is an outdoor venue along the Ohio River.

Health care and major roads are close to most neighborhood streets

Salem Heights is mostly car-dependent, although some streets do have sidewalks. The area is bordered by Interstate 275 to the south. There are Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority bus stops along Salem Road, Sutton Road and Burney Lane. "Anderson Township is just 15 minutes from downtown, which is where everything happens,” McKinney says. “... It’s 20 minutes to the CVG [Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International] Airport, which is the international airport that everyone uses in the Cincinnati area.” The Mercy Health Anderson HealthPlex is off Five Mile Road.
