on Interstate 75 rests Winton, a town with rural roots and good schools. “It’s close to the city, but it has a very rural feel,” says Kate Bridgman of Comey & Shepard Realtors. Bridgman has been selling homes in the Cincinnati area for 20 years and continues, “this area used to back up to farming land called Frog Town because of all the frogs by the creeks, and there is still a lot of farming in the area today.”
Home values rising for longtime residents and newcomers
Three-bedroom homes in Winton begin at $120,000, while Cape Cod-style bungalows are in the $160,000 range. For a modern, newly built home, the price is close to $350,000. Houses sit on gridded roads with flat, easily walkable sidewalks on both flanks. Mature trees shade the small lawns, and the majority of the homes have driveways, so on-street parking won’t be an issue. The houses are in residential areas, and there is not much through traffic. “It’s a mix of long-term owners and younger families that move in the area due to the schools,” says Bridgman. “Some renovation is going on and the area has gained value over the last five years.”
Students attend Cincinnati schools, some of which earn top marks
Children in Winton head to Cincinnati Public Schools, beginning at Winton Hills Academy Elementary. The public school serves students from preschool to sixth grade and holds a C-rating on Niche. Winton Hill’s 16:1 student-to-teacher ratio is better than the national average. Beginning in seventh grade, students head to the highly regarded Walnut Hills High School. Walnut Hills holds an A-plus rating on Niche and was named the sixth-best public school in Ohio and among the top 100 in the nation. Furthermore, the school received an A-minus rating as one of the most diverse schools in Ohio.
Residents enjoy local parks, roller rinks and a parkour facility
When not in school, kids can head to the playground at Salway Park. Salway also features community grills and a quiet picnic area. For those looking to get some exercise in nature, Mill Creek Greenway Trail is a paved 3.5-mile trek great for cyclists, joggers or leisurely walks with the dog. The fun doesn’t stop when the winter rolls in, as the Winton Hills Recreation Center has plenty of indoor recreation options. Locals can shoot hoops on indoor basketball courts or lace up their skates and enjoy the rec center’s indoor roller rink. Swift Movement is an indoor Parkour training facility where people of all ages can learn from Parkour experts in a fun and safe environment.
From lamb chops to local produce, food and retail options are nearby
Residents flock to Ruth’s Parkside Café, which was named Best Neighborhood Restaurant in Central Cincinnati by CityBeat in 2022. Lunch offerings include open-faced bagel sandwiches and red bean burritos, while Ruth’s is grilling up lamb chops and strip steaks for dinner. St. Bernard Pub has specialty sandwiches like the pork tenderloin and adult grilled cheese, and the patio is a great place to enjoy a drink in the summertime. The Northside Yacht Club has a full menu of vegan and gluten-free options for brunch and dinner, but the real fun happens at night when live music acts take to the stage. For a chill afternoon, Taft’s Brewpourium is a great way to spend an afternoon trying out craft beer offerings.
The Northside Farmers Market is open every Wednesday and features locally sourced produce and baked goods straight from Frogtown. There are a pair of Krogers in the area for grocery shoppers. Residents can head to the location off Interstate 75 or Highway 126 to stock up for the week ahead. The Target, located south on I-75, is a favorite for locals to pick up household items and much more. For plenty of retail options, Rockwood Commons & Pavilion has the avid shopper covered.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
