North Claremont is a residential neighborhood that offers a comfortable suburban lifestyle that's still close enough to everything Claremont has to offer. Separated from the rest of the city by state Route 210 and bordered to the north by the San Gabriel Mountains, the neighborhood feels relatively secluded while still providing easy access to both the outdoors and shopping. “You’re right next to the foothills, with some communities right up on the hills, so you get great views, great hiking,” says real estate advisor and Claremont native Ben Nance of Sotheby’s International. “It’s really serene up there, but it’s still pretty close to central Claremont.”

Midcentury ranch-style homes and modern condos

Housing in North Claremont is made up of a mix of midcentury California ranch-style homes, contemporary two-story homes and a selection of condos and townhouses concentrated along Base Line Road. Yards in the neighborhood are a bit larger than most of Claremont, backyard pools are common and excellent views of the San Gabriel Mountains are everywhere. Condos and townhouses in the neighborhood typically sell for $700,000 to $1 million, while single-family homes usually list for $1.1 to $1.4 million. Fire risk is a concern for parts of the neighborhood, especially those close to Claremont Hills Wilderness Park on the north side.

Claremont Hills Wilderness Area offers extensive hiking

One of the North Claremont’s biggest draws is the extensive trail network on the north side of the neighborhood. The trails run through the 2,500-acre Claremont Hills Wilderness Park and can be followed all the way into the San Gabriel Mountains and Angeles National Forest, where hikers will find everything from waterfalls to wildlife to stunning views of the valley. There are also several well-maintained city parks spread out throughout the neighborhood, including the spacious La Puerta Sports Park, which hosts youth soccer and baseball. The California Botanic Garden is just across the 210 and features over 2,000 species of California-native plants.

A few shops and restaurants along Base Line Road

North Claremont is more residential than most of the rest of the city. Base Line Road on the south side of the neighborhood is home to Vons and Whole Foods and a few restaurants, including the highly rated Portuguese and Italian eatery Euro Cafe. But mostly, when locals want to go out for shopping or dining, they head to Foothill Boulevard or downtown Claremont, which are less than ten minutes away by car.

Highly rated Claremont public schools

North Claremont’s public schools are run by the Claremont Unified School District, which has an A grade on Niche. Chaparral Elementary School and Claremont High also have A grades, while El Roble Intermediate School has an A-minus. The neighborhood is also just down the road from The Webb Schools, one of the country’s most exclusive boarding schools. The school is well-known for its annual student trips, the spoils of which are collected in the impressive and open-to-the-public Raymond M. Events downtown and the Claremont Farmers & Artisans Market

Most of the area's major events center around downtown Claremont and the adjacent Claremont Colleges campuses. Downtown regularly hosts events, ranging from the weekly Claremont Farmers & Artisans Market to the annual Village Venture Arts & Crafts Festival in October. The colleges put on a number of public events every year, including the always-popular Midsummer Shakespeare Festival at Pomona College.

Getting around the San Gabriel Valley

State Route 210 runs along the south side of the neighborhood, eventually turning into Interstate 210 to the west in Azusa. Interstate 10, the nearest major freeway, is just over 3 miles to the south and connects the town to San Bernardino and east Los Angeles. Downtown Claremont is home to the nearest stop on the Metrolink SB line, which runs from downtown LA to San Bernardino. While it’s a bit of a hike to Los Angeles International Airport, it’s just 11 miles to Ontario International Airport, which features direct flights to nearly 30 destinations.
